  • Eyes feel better on pain meds

I had a root canal two days ago and have been taking percocets 500 mg for the past day and a half. Weirdly, my eyes feel and look better. They are not perfect but I was able to go into the grocery store and not run out in pain. So does this mean that the stesemic drugs like neurontin or lyrica might help me? I have been dx with corneal neuralgia by Dr. Jacobs and BFS but my local corneal specialist refused to prescribe the drugs.

Neurontin is gabapentin and lyrica is pregabalin which were originally epilepsy drugs so they damp down pain signals. The oxycodone and acetaminophen in percocet work differently so they may not help you as much.

It is ridiculous that you have been diagnosed as having neuralgia but are not being given the chance to try out pain relief to see what works. I take neurontin for another illness but I did not notice an effect on my eyes. Having said that, they were very bad at that time but have improved so it maybe did help.

You can get acetaminophen over the counter so it would be worth trying that first.

I hope you get something to help,

    R.

What amount of Neurontin is generally considered able to help? I've started off at 110 mg daily (once daily) and I don't really notice a difference.

I was just prescribed Neurontin and told to take 100mg 3x per day - so it would be 300mg per day. But, I'd work up slowly.

Has it helped you so far? Are you a Lasik person, and if so, how far along? I'm 15 months post Lasik. This is such a nightmare, but I try to stay calm, b/c I know that freaking out isn't going to help matters.

I think I no longer have dr eye, but basically neuralgia pain, which kind of scares me. Do most post Lasik here have that, or MGD/dry eye? I guess I don't care what it is, I just hope/pray that we all get better someday.

Do you feel normal for parts of the day? I'll be ok for a couple of hours, and then, for no reason, my eyes start to burn, and often there is nothing that can take the pain away.

I'm also considering serum drops and lacosamide drops.....anything to help!

I am 9 years post-LASIK. My doctor prescribed serum, every 2 hours. And Neurontin. Instead of the Neurontin, I'm going with Amitrypline, prescribed by a neurologist. He had me start on 10mg, then go up to 20mg if it wasn't working. I am now on 20mg and it is helping. I had confocal imaging done a few weeks ago. I've been on the serum not quite a year, and the confocal showed "one" nerve regenerating in my left eye, and "one" nerve "branching" in my right eye. Not a lot after a year on serum but it is a sign of hope - that many years after LASIK the nerves can regenerate. When reading about the serum, I read they are not sure if it is the serum that is causing nerves to regenerate, or, that the serum is providing the optimal environment in which nerves can regenerate.

I have had success with another nerve condition using Amitrypline. After a year on it I went off and noticed that the nerves stopped firing and did calm down.

I does get better. I have had amazing success with the serum. I am very pro serum - 20%, 8x per day at a minimum. I had LASIK because I was contact lens intolerant (a sign of dry eye/MGD). I also have ocular rosacea. And yes, I'll be fine for a few hours and then my eyes burn. I don't get it. But I am starting to think that there are times throughout the day where my eyes are exposed to dry or moving air, and that I need to drop more frequently. I think it has something to do with the ocular surface - if my eye (my right eye is the one with neuralgia) get's a bit too dry, my nerves overreact and start firing. That' my thinking.

My corneal specialist gave me some lyrica 25mg (which my other doc said wasn't nearly enough) but anyway.. It didnt do anything for my eyes but took away anxiety and helped me sleep better. I googled it and it turns out it was approved for generalized anxiety disorder and sleep issues.. I noticed I felt better today about everything... Weird. To bad it didn't help the eyes.

can you tell me a little more about what is involved with this "serum" treatment? What is the serum and how do you administer it? Is it an eye drop?

Also did you get diagnosed with corneal neuralgia by an ophthalmologist or by the neurologist? We are in Melbourne, Australia and my wife has had dry eye (MGD) for 4 years. But her pain seems now to be more than her symptoms would suggest. Her dryness has improved somewhat due to recent IPL treatment but the pain has not, so we want to investigate corneal neuralgia.

                Thanks for any info.
