I thought this was significant -- from the Borsook future without pain article:
"Millions of individuals with so-called dry eye disease probably suffer from nerve damage to the cornea; surgical interventions such as LASIK (wherein the cornea is shaved to produce improved vision) can also produce corneal nerve damage and chronic pain."
