  • Is there any alternative to heating up the rice baggy when traveling?

I'm going on a cruise to Alaska in about two months time.

For me weather changes, just aggravate my dry eye and
blurryness to no end. So, regular rice baggys 2 or
even 3 times a day for 10 minutes is a given. I love
to travel, but have always had problems out on the
    road.

Warm/hot washcloths work, but for less time, and
the heat just isnt as consistant.

    My question is this.

Since i wont have a microwave handy on my cruise, can
I find another way to heat it up?

I'm thinking a hair dryer might help, but if anyone
has any other "safe" ideas or alternaives, please
    chime in.

    Thanks for your suggestions!

I've never tried this on my eyes, but what about a heating pad (done on low heat and carefully)?

I always have a heating pad around for my muscle pain and for belly upsets---maybe they come in a "mini" size that could work for the face.

Also there are those chemical "hand warmer" packs that you can activate. I've not tried them either, but my husband puts them in his shoes in winter.

Hey guys ... Check out the Thermoeyes product that goes with Tranquileyes goggles. Not sure if Rebecca's stocking that in the store, but if not you can get addtl info on the Eyeeco Web site.

          Hi, mysny --

First of all, congratulations; I bet you'll have a fabulous time on your Alaskan cruise!

Secondly, assuming that you spend considerable time on the ship itself in between the ports of call, I'd suggest asking a steward or waiter or staff member if they would heat up your rice baggy back in the kitchen microwave
(or even escort you back there to do it yourself). Same for any restaurant onshore, if the timetable permits resting your eyes in the next few minutes. After all, they are in the HOSPITALITY business, aren't they?

I've watched my son and his wife successfully ask for such favors (heating up baby food or a bottle or a washcloth) when traveling with small children.

I'm not suggesting that you should count on this as opposed to the other options suggested; just don't want you to rule out this possibility.

You should ask if it's possible to have a small microwave in your cabin. Sometimes if you need something for medical reasons, you'll get a micro wave or a frig. My daughter needs a refrigerator in a motel when she travels and mostly she will be accommodated.

Be sure and tell them it's for medical related. I don't know, maybe your eye doc will write a letter.? Probably not. You should request this in plenty of time before so they have time to process it. Also, we have never encountered a charge for a microwave or frig for medical need.

Otherwise, a heating pad is a good idea. I take one when traveling whenever I can. I'm on the older side and something usually aches.

            Lucy

PS. So is Mary--on the older side. lol
Don't trust any refractive surgeon with YOUR eyes.

to msny: I think that Lucy has made a splendid suggestion, that you should assertively ask in advance for a microwave in your cabin
. . . preferably with -- but if not, give it a try even without -- supporting information such as your doc's endorsement about "medical necessity."

to Lucy: oh, no, now you and I will need to have yet another spat about the degree to which my being older actually = my being wiser . . .

                Thanks everyone for your responses.
I'm going to take a heating pad on our cruise.

Actually, my biggest fear is that I will miss
some treaments and my vision will suffer.

I find that I really need it 2x a day for ten minutes.
Then I put in my Restasis and Dwelle, and express
                the oils.
