  • Panoptx + specific lenses: HELP!

    Hello everybody,

I am an italian 26 yrs old PhD student at Arizona State Univerisity (Tempe, Phoenix) and I have very severe dry eye problems. As these problems are related to the use of computer video terminals, I have thought that a great solution would be to join a moisture chamber frame (like the one made by Panoptx with foam removable frames) with a specific prescription lens. In particular, I would need to have my lens treated with both UV and Anti-Reflection protection, and tinted of 15% amber coloration.

Based on your all experience, which might be the best solution to obtain such a combination (moisture chamber frame + ANTI-UV, AR and amber tint lenses)?

As I have just arrived in Tempe (AZ), I don’t really know how to move and where to go to find the best place to have some help. The only thing I did, was to get an appointment with an eye doctor suggested by the Health University Center… and I have been punctual plugs since then. However, they didn’t work so much as I think that the main reason of all my discomfort is represented by the video terminals + air conditionings (that has been very since I arrived in Arizona). So when I showed him some pictures of Panoptx glasses and computer lenses (as I was saying above: UV, AR and amber tint lenses), the doctor first made joke of the glasses and then said I could try whatever.
The point is that I am new over Phoenix and USA and I don’t speak a very good English. So, if anyone may tell me how to find real help, I’ll be more that grateful!

It is a very important problem to me, and I look forward to receive your feedback.

    Best wishes

    Your Luca

changing the lenses and features of the lenses

I have some other important questions:

Once I will buy a Panoptx eyeglass product (for example), based on your experience, do you think I can replace the Panoptx lenses with other lenses? Is it technically possible? Of course, I do not expect any warranty for what I am going to do!

    RADIUS OF THE LENS:
Does anyone know about the radius and other relevant lens features of Panoptx glasses? I tried to phone them, but they only gave me the lenght and width for some lenses. However, I think that the radius and other related informations are more important if one wants to previously if it is possible to change the lenses.

I look forward to see some response,

    Luca Laudani

      Panoptx

      Luca,
Find out from Panoptx which opticians in your area carry their line. Then you can ask them to get a couple pairs for you to try out, if they don't carry them in the store. My only caution is to be careful about trying them on for a good fit. I bought my first pair at the opticians at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston and they did do a better job of fitting them than my subsequent pairs from more convenient stores. More experience at it , I suppose. Good luck!

        Hi Luca and welcome!

I agree that getting a good frame/foam fit is the first hurdle. I'd first go to some local dealers and try on models till you get one that is really comfortable. They are usually at Harley Davidson dealerships but I'm sure there are also optical shops and ophthalmologists in Phoenix that would carry them. Use the dealer locator page to find some near you - but I'd recommend calling them first and finding out specifically which CV models they carry - and be aware this product line is being upgraded so what they have in stock may not be the same as what the manufacturer now makes!

Getting your preferred lens may be a toughie. What's your prescription? The prescriptions that can be accommodated vary by frame... I think that the Sirocco has the widest range (up to about -5.00) if I remember right.

I don't think they do amber though. For anything out of the ordinary like this you will probably need to get some kind of optical specialist. I recommend a place called Sunray Optical, you can call them at 1 888 548-0558 (ask for Mo Dupree). They have a lot of experience with Panoptx and can do some creative things. If they can't do it, probably no one can. Personally, I have found the Sirocco with photochromic lens works well for me when I'm on the computer or reading. You can also get some with a plain clear lens I believe.

I also have some information on some other moisture chamber glasses that somebody sent me awhile back - I need to dig it off my email archives where it got buried - if I find it I will post it.

          Dear Rebecca, dear Elaine,

first I would like to thank you very much for your very usefull help. I followed all your suggestions and now I can fight very efficiently against my dry eyes. The heavyglare.com website (by Sunray Optical) is great and they were really very very gentle and professional with me. My prescription is not very strong (OD: 0,5 and OS: 0,25), but it will take probably two weeks for the eyeglasses to be sent over here. Meanwhile, I had to leave from my job (PhD) and say to my supervisor that my eyes need some rest from computer and paper work. As my father told me several times: we only have one life and we only have two eyes for that life. So, I would suggest to all dry eye people like me, to find out the main reason why your eyes may have got dry and fight against that! There must be a cause underlying the problem, it is always like that. That's what I think.

In my case, the computer screen is one of them, that's why I need particular lenses on my dry eye-glasses to relax the eyes while working. One common factor is the air-conditioning that is very powerfull in USA and other civil countries: I find that is harmful and dangerous not only for the eyes. However, this is only my point of view (personal opinion).

Eye relax timing starts now, think about it!

Thanks again Rebecca and Elaine, I will let you know the results.

          Take care,
          Luca
