  • Adidas Elevation Climacool vs Wilex X Climacool

    Hey guys,

So I have only recently come round to the idea of buying daytime protective eyewear, mainly because it's dawned on me just how much worse my eyes feel outdoors in the (primarily) wind, cold, sun, pollution etc.

I live in London, and so Panoptx / 7Eye isn't an option for me. Wiley X is an option, but only online, and so I don't have the opportunity to try them on first to make sure the fit is good. I have had the opportunity to try on the Adidas Climacool glasses (Oxford Street if anyone is interested), and they seemed like a pretty decent fit (formed a pretty tight seal without feeling uncomfortable.)

What I am really after is feedback from anyone who (preferably) has tried both Wiley X glasses and the Adidas ones, but also anyone who has tried just one or the other. I've read on here that the Adidas glasses aren't great in terms of preventing wind from reaching the eyes; can anyone confirm that the Wiley X glasses are significantly better in this respect (wind 'blockage' is the main reason I want to get glasses of this type). It seems like the Adidas are quite a lot more pricey than their basic Wiley X counterparts; anyone know why this is?

Another thing I'm a little confused on, and this goes for both Wiley X and Adidas glasses, is how you get prescription lenses fitted; do you order them with the prescription lenses? Or do you first buy the glasses and then get lenses made / fitted separately by your opticians or something?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

    Hi elltrev,

well, I can give you my personal feedback on the adidas...I bought a pair last summer. The fit is very good, but the wind resistance is mediocre, bevause the foam inserts are vented all around (to prevent misting and fogging, I guess) but I've found them to be useless in terms of protecting my eyes, specially out of doors when it's very windy.

The way you get the prescription lens in them is via a small clip-in insert which holds the prescription and fits inside the main frame, which can be worn also without the insert as plain sunglasses. They are really nice and comfortable, but just not windproof enough for me.

If you're in London, you could try Michel Guillon's shop in Sloane Square - he stocks Wileys, and I did go there to try them on but they were not a good fit for me at all. They're different in that the lenses in them are made to your prescription, so they are "fixed" so to speak....with the adidas, you could theoretically have different inserts for reading, distance etc.

I've ended up carrying on using the fit-over safety goggles I bought on e-bay, which are bulky, not exactly unobtrusive, but the foam surround pretty much seals air out of my eyes, and they fit over all my different prescription glasses. They're cheap, and available in tinted or plain lens versions. If youwant more info, pm me.

    Hope this helps.

Weare not well served here in the UK as far as eyewear goes, are we?

As far as price is concerned, you'll find huge variations...my adidas cost about £230 (including the insert) whereas the Wileys at Guillon's were a bit more - mind you, if they fit and work it';s worth it.

Thanks Eva, I really appreciate the info.

It seems the consensus is that the Adidas glasses are mediocre at best at protecting the eyes from wind, which is what I actually want them for. I would rather wear something like you mentioned and look relatively stupid, then look mildly less weird but pay through the nose whilst not seeing a huge benefit.

I actually have an appointment with Michel next week, so will be sure to check out the Wiley X pairs on offer. They sound very expensive compared to the internet, so I may just use the opportunity to see what (if anything) fits best and then buy that pair online. If nothing fits and / or I don't think they're going to be effective, I'm resigned to buying the type of goggles that you mention.

You're right that the UK is some way behind US in helping those of us with this condition, but it seems as though there are still things we can do over here to help ourselves.

      Thanks again.
