I'm a veterinarian. In animals demodex is known as red mange. Most dogs catch it as puppies. It often starts as spots of hair loss around the eyes. They get it, develop an immune response and get over it. A small percentage of dogs seem to be missing some part of their immune system, allowing the mange to take over the entire body.
Lime-sulfur dip is an old treatment. Mitonane dip in another. Ivermectin is an oral dewormer first developed for horses. It can be injected or taken orally for demodex. It's been used topically to treat ear mites in dogs. So theoretically it could be used topically to treat follicular demodex. There are few side effects associated with the drug.
