Hey, this is the place where we sure all understand the need to talk about it!!

Given the -cycline problems have you ever tried oral erythromycin? Maybe something to talk to your doc about?

Yes, I had issues w/ the -cyclines and considered erythromycin. I wa told it was next in line to try. How 'bout the NAC/Glutathione supplement? Check out this thread...

what does oral erythromycin help with? when i was in eighth grade, a few months before my dry eye/ blepharitis/ SLK problems started, i took erythromycin orally for my skin, but i developed a tolerance to it and had to quit taking it... i'm kinda wondering now if this could be contributing to some of my eye problems... what do y'all think? do y'all think if i took it again it would help, or would it just mess me up more? or do y'all think it probably has nothing to do w/ my eye problems? sry, i'm always looking for any possible cause of my eyes, and this could just be another option.

Erythymicin makes me throw up I tired it in the film tab form and hold it down for hrs but that is it so that is why we tried the zithromax its in the erythymicin family, I think its called azrythimicin I am not god with the spelling the generic just came out and that is what is on the bottle. So its been a tough road but ive tried alot. I cant say I havent gotten any better I just havent become well enough to live much of a life. but yes I have tried those. I dident realise that those meds really worked but I guess they do. I would be willing to try about anything to make this go away. This is day 2 since the expression and I tell you I just woke up and the eyes etill have a bunch of gunk coming out. So lets hope this is a solution.

That's a really good sign, Mike. I had my glands expressed over a year ago. I remember the first time some of the glands cut loose. It was a warm gush of crud that blurred my vision. I was pretty freaked out but the doc was really rockin' over it. It took about two months of rice baggy compresses (twice/day), followed by lid massage and (at minimum) twice weekly lidscrubs before he expressed my glands and said they looked good. I hope it's for good. I do my compresses pretty faithfully.

The doctor who helped me told me it would take awhile and that I would have to faithfully follow his instructions (compresses, massage, gentle scrubs). At this point I can squeeze my eyes tightly and feel oil come out.

I'm aqueous deficient as well as meibomian gland challenged so I still have to do a lot of eye pampering.

Cindy that really gives me some light at the end of the tunnel. The dr wont say I am going to get better but he seems optimistic that this will work. I understnad he cant tell me im going to get butt But I think he wouldent put me through this if he dident think it would work. I have alot of crud coming out so lets hope. Its also yellow crud that he siad it infection in the glands so lets hope clearing that out and making it not infected will help solve the issue.

                Amy,

I wouldn't blame erythro. for your problems. A by-product of certain antibiotics like the -cyclines and erythromycin, for example, is they help keep the oil glands in the skin flowing. Barring any unusual side-effect you may have experienced, the erythro. would normally help your eyes to feel better assuming they were uncomfortable due to a meibomian gland issue. Erythromycin would also have improved an acne condition by the same action.

Yes unfortunately some people get bad GI side effects from the oral form.

                    diana,

i dunno thats what's kind of making me question the medicine though... my dry eye problems are associated with my oil glands being messed up. so would quitting erythromycin have caused me to have a flare up because my body had been used to taking erythromycin when i didn't have eye problems to begin w/?

                      Cindy,
When they expressed them did it hurt I mean did they really have to push to open them up. Did they do the uppers and lowers and did they open from that point on or did you have to go back and do it again? Sorry to ask so much I was told it make take a few times to get them flowing again, then a maintaince phase. I dident know if this sounds like what you did. Did it take time to get things going?

I will not take E-mycin because of GI problems and I imagine it's pretty common.

Hey, back in college I took Erythromycin and missed a whole day of class because of it. It just now occurred to me that it really isn't offered much to anyone in my family like it used to be. I suppose most people struggled with it.

Hi Mike, My experience has been just as you've outlined. My doctor pushed harder during expression than I would have ever dared to or would do myself. I'm glad some of the plugged openings broke loose the first time because it was very motivating for me. He tried to do the uppers but they wouldn't budge. It did take a few visits and a lot of compresses etc. before they were cleaned out and flowing easily. I suppose I'm in maintenance phase now.
