  • Anybody for some rice?

As many of you know, I've been a "rice baggy" convert ever since first trying this treatment for MGD several years ago at the urging of Sandra Brown, an ophthalmologist some of you will remember from our dry eye meeting last February, who has seen many patients successfully control chronic blepharitis/MGD with The Rice Baggy (though I think she calls them Bleph Packs or something).

I am so convinced of the benefits that I finally took this to the next level and decided to see about getting some made commercially. Though "commercially" is not quite the word! I went back to the original supplier, a lady that makes these individually from her home in a tiny town in west Texas.

We worked together to come up with a modified design. I wanted to make sure the materials would be organic, dye-free and so on, and also really wanted to find a good way to keep it clean. (One of the most frequent questions I've had about rice baggies has been... how often do you replace them? To which I am always forced to respond, Do as I say, not as I do ).

What we finally came up with was a rice baggy of a soft woven organic cotton (no dyes, etc). It's about the size of an eyeglass case. It comes with its own little "pillowcover", a slip-on cover made of a lovely organic knit cotton - rather thicker than the woven cotton of the baggy itself but very soft. The cover can be removed and washed as frequently as you want, so you don't have to throw away the baggy itself.

When I got back from my trip I found that my very first little shipment of Rice Baggies had arrived! So for those of you who would like to try one, they will soon be available in The Dry Eye Shop as soon as I get time to write the instructions (e.g. DON'T OVERHEAT; DO ASK YOUR DOCTOR FIRST; etc) and disclaimer (e.g. PRETTY PLEASE DON'T SUE US IF YOU FAIL TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AND BURN YOURSELF) and come up with a name (hmmmm) and a price (ugh).

Meantime... I'm sending out 5 freebies, to the first 5 people who ask. If you'd like to be a guinea pig, please email me your name & address.

I WANT SOME! I WANT SOME AND SOME MORE!

I have a hard time keeping my dignity with a sock of bad taste that was sacrificed in order for me to make a rice baggy...Well this just might be it!

I can't think of many things that have been as beneficial to me as the hot compresses. And the funny part is, I always thought I didn't need them since I don't have MGD/blepharitis. Blame my "academic approach" towards solutions...

I want some and I don't intend to read the instructions Rebecca, please let us know when they'll be available! I can't wait!

I would certainly be interested in trying one. Shucks, I don't have access to outside e-mail here @ the office, although I'm sure all the freebies have been claimed at this point. Oh well, I guess I'll order one when they come available in the shop. They sound rice

I know, I went home from work last night and did not go on-line. Went out to Valentine's dinner instead and missed out on the freebies!!! Oh well, hopefully some of our very nice dry eye buddies are the ones who won out! That was so sweet of Rebecca to set up 5 guinea pigs with the freebies!!

                Material

What material is used? I've used a thin sock but the microwave keeps burning holes in them.

If you're burning holes in your rice bag, put a glass of water in the microwave with it when you heat it. It should help and will add a little humidity to the rice.

Cotton - it's a medium weight organic cotton weave.

I've used a baggy from a light cotton muslin for years and never had any problems with it.

                      I've got one

I've got one of these little creatures and I have to say it's the softest nicest rice baggie!! I do use a cup of water in the microwave with it tho. I just like the moist heat. It is more soothing to me than the dry heat and it's also wonderful for a headache.

I will be one of the rice baggie's devoted fans Rebecca!

It is so great to hear everyone's feedback. I received my new rice baggy but have not made the time to use it yet. Pretty lazy, arent I? Tonight is definitely the night!
