  • I Love Lid Therapy!!

I just love lid therapy but I was dragged kicking and screaming into having to do it and quite probably having to do it the rest of my life (in one form or another).

Compresses, massages and scrubs. Sometimes it's an elaborate undertaking, sometimes it's as simple as holding my very warm coffee mug against my eyes.

This is my current regimen (with many thanks to my O.D. for giving such a great explanation):

    Lid scrubs:

1.Place a very warm, damp washcloth over your eyes and leave it there until it turns lukewarm. Then remove it.

    2. Dampen a Q-tip with saline solution and with your finger, gently pull your lower lid down.

    3. You will work on the lid rim in three sections beginning first at the nasal side. The next section is mid-lid rim, the last section is the outer lid rim.

    4. Rub the Q-tip in a back and forth motion along the lower lid where the lashes meet the lid beginning with the first section (nasal side). He said to rub the Q-tip back and forth for 10-15 seconds applying enough pressure to break loose the dried particles. Pressure is needed or the particles will not break loose. Then move on to the second section for 10-15 seconds and finally the third section for 10-15 seconds.

He said that most people, when doing a lid scrub, rub too gently and the particles don't actually break loose. They need to break loose to clear out the gland openings and let the oil run freer.

I've tried it and so has my son. I have noticed a bit of difference. For my son, the difference has been remarkable. It took a some practice to apply a little more pressure with the Q-tip but is quite easy and controlled considering you are working on a very small area at a time.

    Ready to try

Okay, I'll give it a try, but YIKES. I've been told all my life not to pull, pinch or in ANY way stretch the skin around my eyes or eyelids! What am I not understanding with the eye scrub and massage?

And never stick anything smaller than your elbow in your ear ! I guess the terms 'gently yet firmly' apply to lid therapy the way I was shown to do it with the q-tip. I don't yank down on my lids, I just gently pull the lower lid away from my eye so I don't graze it with the q-tip.

Speaking of things we've been told all our lives...I was taught early on by my grandmother to always use the tip of my ring finger when I apply lotion around my eyes(or in this case, manipulating my lids) because your ring finger will be gentler to the skin than your index finger. Silly as it sounds, that's what I do.

Thank you for those great suggestions on lid scrubs. It really helps.
One quick question though, doesn't the cotton on the Q-tips get in your eye? I feel like I'm always pulling out small pieces from my eyelashes.

Not if you moisten the Q-tip with saline first.
