  • Why has no one expressed my meibomian glands all these years?

I keep reading here that patients get their meibomian glands manually expressed yet this was never offered to me and I have been a patient for over a dozen years now. Lately I am completely non functional. The local dry eye expert offered lipiflow last year to me yet never once expressed my glands. I am very confused as my tear break up is now less than 1, use to be 3 at least. Thanks in advance.

From my understanding expressions need to be done regularly to be effective. The one time my doctor expressed my glands was to find out information about how the glands were expressing and the consistency.

I do them daily after a hot compress. If I dont, some of my glands start to get clogged with thicker oil. If you do decide to do them yourself you should do some research as to what technique to use because certain techniques could possibly cause damage.

Thank you. I am too scared to do it myself, I don't want to mess up. I need to find someone to assist me, though it's going to be hard to find someone to trust to do it even when I find someone who routinely does it.

The opthalmologist told me yesterday that my glands are not blocked but just slow. So he doesn't feel MG expression will work for me. That was the next thing to try, not sure what to do now. I will try to see the cornea specialist because the opthalmologist I saw specializes in cataracts. Also, somehow my tbut went from -1 to 2 to now 5-6 and yet I hurt like heck. I don't think this tbut makes sense, especially since it was a 3 the day I went in for yearly exam and was doing just fine, all the other numbers came after it got bad overnight. Makes no sense I would be OK with a 3 and not a 6. I feel like -1. Any comments appreciated, thanks all and happy holidays.
