Restasis has not helped me I see how plugs can do waht you say and that does worry me. I worry if I remove the lowers I would be even worse and now I cant do anything at all in my life, I am completely debiltiated. Yet I want them out...and yet I want uppers. I am so confused I dont know what to do. I cant handle the constant pain. Maybe I will again ask my regular opthamologist for something like the Zibrom without the preservatives so I can get some relief like you...

      ...

Hi Vicki - Hope you are making some progress. I did speak with someone at Ista re Xibrom on Monday - and while they do not currently have a BAK or preservative free drop the rep stated they are considering making one available. Of course, they did push the fact that their product has 1/2 the BAK as Acular (non pf version) - and did mention many folks are using their drops for the purposes I have described - that is 'off label' use.
Another point you may consider - seeing a 'pain' specialist if you have not done so already. Vicodin is a strong med too - but has helped me when days are toughest.

Xibrom gives relief to dry eye pain and inflammation

Xibrom is probably the most potent NSAID available and it gives instant relief to dry eyes; besides that, according to my doctor, if used longer, it can remarkably improve all the markers of the disease, especially if combined with a steroid (preferably mild one like Lotemax or FML).

I have used Akular and Voltaren drops which are similar to Xibrom, and they also help resolve mucus filaments. The standard treatment for mucus filaments with Voltaren (diclofenac) drops is 28 days, 4 times a day.

I believe that such a combination in addition to standard treatments (Restasis, artificial tears, doxycycline) can treat dry eye, not just alleviate the symptoms associated with it.
