So recently i found out the value of vitamin A for my dry eyes. When I cut down on my vitamin A consumption (3 times in the past 2 years due to me getting an upset stomach from my multivitamin) i noticed my eyes were immediately drier, and more irritated. Furthermore I also believe they produced corneal abrasions (im still waiting to get into an eye specialist but told it would be this month) the abrasions simply occurred very easily, im not 100 percent sure how they occurred all i know is nothing struck my eye, but they were unbelievably dry and fragile. My eyes were so dry that the abrasion were caused easily luckily not effecting my eyesight. I noticed in my research its quite common in vitamin a deficient countries. Upon restarting my vitamin A consumption (5000 retinol) the abrasions cleared, my eyes were not nearly as dry and generally more healthy. One eye doctor explained in pretty simple terms if the eye is vitamin A deficient it drys up and the cornea can be damaged or torn easily.
SO basically my question is wether beta-carotene is as effective as retinol? Due to dangers and toxicity issues of retinol im always worried about how much i consume. Has anyone tried beta-carotene supplements and noticed they did not work as good? Or should it make no difference?
