  • Does diet seem to effect your dry eyes?

I have had dry eyes for a couple of years and it seems to me that if I consume a lot of sweets, or something extremely sweet, like a jumbo Safeway cookie that my eyes bother me even more than they did a little bit earlier. I have not found any literature that agrees with this so I don't know if it is coincidence or real. Can anyone else tell me what they see with their eyes? Or anything they have read or heard?

    Thanks,
    Trac

Sugar is one of those things they always tell you to eliminate if you're having issues (many kind of issues), along with salt, caffeine, alcohol, so it would make sense that it could have an impact on your dry eye.

here's something on about.com re: sugar & inflammation

I'm thinking sugar is known to increase inflammation in general, which is why people with autoimmune diseases should limit it, but not sure.

Also, I've been hearing a lot of talk about "high histamine foods" that can aggravate people (including eyes, skin, etc) with allergic-type problems. My doc is considering referral for me to a Mast Cell Activation Disorder specialist because I have so many sensitivities to meds, chemicals and possibly some foods, as well as many other health symptoms not explained. Those specialists are very few, but there happens to be one in my town. People with MCAD have to avoid high histamine foods. I can't remember if sugar is one of them but there are lists on the web.

        Foods high in histamine

Rosacea diets require that you avoid foods high in histamine. These are fermented foods - cheese, fermented soy products (soy sauce), vinegars (salad dressings, ketchup, marinades), alcohol, and other fermented foods (e.g., pickles, sauerkraut).

Eggplant and spinach contain high levels of histamine naturally.

Rosacea.org has a page of food triggers. See here: http://www.rosacea.org/patients/materials/triggers.php

Wow, there are a lot of foods on that list that I consume, some of them every day.
