  • Does Alcohol Make Things Worse?

    hello
can anyone tell me if alcohol even like 1 glass makes your eyes sore or drier,i dont usually drink but last night i just had 1 glass(hard day at work) and woke up with blood shot eyes, trying to figure if it was that or just the teeny bit more eyeshadow i wore.
if anyone knows about it then that be great.
sorry if its a strange question im just curious

    thanks

    hi Kate,

alcohol does dehydrate you, and if your glass was a pint of scotch then it would definitely affect your eyes (might make you fall over as well)... but a single glass of beer, for instance, shouldn't do much harm.

however - eyeshadow definitely doesn't do your eyes any good - especially if the stuff's been around for a while, when it becomes a playground for nasty bacteria. i know a lot of people like to use eye makeup, so i'd suggest trying to find a product which is upfront about its ingredients, and checking out the ingredients to be sure that there's no unpleasant preservatives (etc) - and then using the makeup sparingly, and keeping it clean and sealed when not being used.

though personally i think your eyes would be much better off if you ditched the slap altogether...

Alcohol does dehydrate you. I can get by with one drink, but I noticed drier eyes if I have more.

I would say alcohol generally affect your eyes in a negative way (just look at "ordinary" peoples eyes after they have drink). But the only time i have woken up with non dry eye this year was after a big party. Sure, i had a pretty bad hangover but i didnt bother me because my eyes was really moist. So, im not sure how bad alcohol really is? Maybe it force you to drink more water and maybe it can kill som bacterias. I dont know?

thank you for all the info
ye it was only a glass of wine but never woke up with my eyes like they were so didnt know wat triggered it off but thought surely the lil amount i had wouldnt of done that but ive worn soem eye shadows before and been fine so im thinking if it was the pub i was but the atmosphere is the same everywhere so not sure whats happened really but there killing me today, not happy haha.
ive tried to ditch make up but im unfortuantly one of those people who cant bare to leave the house without it,natural beauty isnt my strong point so i have to hide behind something, but have a website that does makeup for problem eyes so will give that ago.
          thanks again guys

hey, dont supose you know of what perservatives to look out for do you, because to be honest i didnt know that eye shadows had them i just thought that people with dry eye shouldnt wear it because of the loose powder like if that makes sense.
any more info on that would be great
            thank you

              One day

Yep this brings up a good point that a lot of people probably need to bring up or have broughten up with their doctor.

If you have blepharitis then I think alcohol, I'm sure for just dry eye too, causes inflammation and I'd say a good deal if you want to get a fairly good buzz.

I haven't really drank in like 4 years or so because of the inflammatory stuff.

Recently an old high school buddy talked me into putting a few down since I am not very social anymore, his reason being it's a "social lubricant" as he put it. As it turned out he was right. At the same time though I learned with all that inflammation I could not have as good of a time as I would like.

So there poses the problem: What is a person with these problems suppose to do for a release?

All I know is untreated I could never go out to a bar, get drunk and have a good time with all this inflammation but maybe there are things one can do to accomplish this type of thing.

Also notable was the fact that I had no face protection on like metrogel. Maybe something like that would have yielded better results. But probably the bigger issues ly in the ocular & peri-ocular tissues.

it is a good point and i know what you mean its like i havent drank properly sice having dry eye as i remember at the beginning on my birthday i was "forced" to get very merry and the next morning,if a hangover wasnt bad enough my eyes were just horrific ,especially my left like it was all veiny and horrible and since then i havent drank but i thought id try again and even with 1 glass i woke up the same so i give up now,not only does dry eye effect your life in so many ways you cant forget your troubles by having a drink.
im the same as you i get called boring and unsociable now because i dont drink but if my friends understood the pain you get when you do then i know they would avoid it,feel like im old before my time hehe.

preservatives in eye makeup? i guess the usual suspects, including the infamous BAK. have a look here, http://www.alkalizeforhealth.net/Ltoxiccosmetics.htm
if you want to scare yourself. or just Google 'eye makeup preservatives'.

eyes very tired and dry at the moment - or i'd look it up for you!

If anyone is looking at alcohol intake, the atmosphere might be a clue. A glass of wine at home may not be a problem, but the same drink in a smoke filled pub might cause extra irritation. I know more places are going smoke-free, but I still think there is smoking in some bars. (I know-I know-won't they ever leave anything alone?) I am a former smoker, but I think things have gone way too far by trying to control what we do. Lucy

Also keep in mind that alcohol is a classic Rosacea/Ocular Rosacea trigger too. I think many on this board may actually have ocular rosacea along with the dry eye, mgd, and other issues as well. They typically coincide and ocular Rosacea is extremely under-diagnosed especially when facial Rosacea is not present. Ocular Rosacea can appear years before facial symotoms appear. You may want to do some searches on this as well. Preservative free drops are your best bet too.

In addition to all of the information above, my eye doc said if you have visible tiny red veins on your eye lid near the lash line, that that is a "probable" sign of ocular rosacea. If your eyes react to (get worse from) any of those things listed on the "triggers" list then that too is another indication you are likely to have it. Hth!
