  • Doxocycline?

I have PRK-induced MGD, and as a treatment option, my optometrist prescribed Doxocycline to me. He said that it would increase production of lipid tears after 4-5 days if continually taken twice daily.

I can't find anything regarding doxocycline here. I'm assuming it is similar to doxycycline, but I can't find much info about doxocycline anywhere. Has anyone here used doxocycline to treat MGD?

Drew, I'm thinking this is just a misspelling of doxycycline.

Yes it's a spellling error. I've been on 100mg Doxycycline once a day since 13 November, 2012 along with preservative free prednisolone and Restasis. Still can't cope without moisture chamber glasses. Healing is a long process. Plus I'd recommend you see a noted dry eye specialist ophthalmologist for further testing and treatment.

        Thank you both.

It was indeed a spelling error. I later noticed that the label on the bottle said "doxy-", even though my prescription showed "doxo-"

Hi Drew, Let me Give you a Heads Up on the Doxycycline, This Medicine Does Help Treat the Bacterial Cases Of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Let me Do a simple Explanation for you as to why your Doc is putting you on this stuff.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is in simple terms what I call the EYELID Acne Disease. The Mebomian Glands Become Clogged Similar to the Sebaceous glands in the face. That's Why Ironically when most Dermatologists try to Treat Peoples Acne, Because 9 times out of 10 its an infection they give their Patients a Dose of Doxycycline if the Glands are clogged.

I, in fact have taken this and have seen positive results, if you can look at your eyelid margin after 6 weeks on doxy those little bumps of solidified oils on the meibomian glands should disappear, the crusts. It did help me some.

To Some more Interesting information, My Physician whom had Worked with Meibomian gland Dysfunction for the Past 40 years at the University of Iowa Ophthalmology department. Had told me that In Most cases of Meibomian gland dysfunction he found that in cultures that Staph, or Strep Bacteria were accumulating in the glands. He stated that When the Bacteria Ate on the Meibomian gland Oils, that changed the composition of the oils into free fatty acids. In lamens terms it turns your Meibomian gland secretions into a shampoo type mixture, which not only drys your eyes out but burns them.

However as of recently, Some Have linked Meibomian gland Dysfunction also to Seborrheic dermatitis! Dandruff for simple words people have linked this condition to a Yeast known as malassezia furfur, The yeast make make home in the glands of the eyelids because there is an active skin infection going on the head, what brings On Blepharitis. This Yeast However in current medicine has no method to treat it in the eyelids. However Treating the Scalp is possible with a Dermatologist.
My best suggestion make sure your the skin on your heads health is ok.

For me, a scalp infection was brought on along with the meibomian gland dysfunction now due to the shampoo I was using. Allergies or Chemical sensitivities to the preservatives in unnatural soaps can cause these type of skin problems.

For the most dermatological descriptive explanation of meibomian gland dysfunction is folliculitis in the eyelids.

The only way to battle this disease is with Treatment of your scalp, your face. Make sure those are healthy and not infected. Also Your eyelids, in meibomian gland dysfunction I have found that the only medicine that can treat the underlying problem is a systemic medicine, Ie. Pills because topical med's cannot sink beneath the skin into the glands to have an effect, that's why docs use doxy.

If it don't clear up by the end of the treatment, might wanna try something to get rid of the yeast. Only thing I know of is enteric coated garlic capsules. However before you try anything like that consult your doctor, or a naturopathic practitioner, before you do any of this.

One reason in particular why I gave you that type of advice, is Standard medicine cannot treat for yeast at the current moment, and neither do they believe it poses a problem. However I have realized after hurricane katrina and those whom had suffered from mold and other yeast related diseases, it is a serious microbe that can not only kill but infect. The Pharmaceutical companies at the moment have no known drug to treat for yeast except for the Extremely risky anti fungal medication. Which is only given to cancer and aids patients due to risk of Liver or Kidney failure. That is because of the Mycotoxins that are released by fungi and yeast when they die. So if you are having that problem, you might wanna consider those garlic pills Like I was talking about, because they do the same job as the expensive pharmaceutical's but without causing liver or kidney failure.

Hopefully that should take care of the inflammation in the glands, if they still inflamed and no oils coming out you should consider meibomian gland duct probing along with lipiflow. These both are surgical and in office medical procedures that will help to reduce or get rid of the clogs in the glands. The glands can form scar tissue after some time and atrophy, meaning wasting away. The orfaces of the meibomian glands can become scarred over not allowing the oils to come out with expression.

thats why surgery may be required in some cases, make sure to have your meibomian glands evaluated for that problem as well.

          good luck

What dose of Doxy twice a day? A top dry eye doc gave me 100 mg to use once a day. I've been on it for 4 months with no results. And if there is little tear production, the lipids have nothing to hold onto.
