quitting doxy after 5 years... anybody else quit it???

well im quitting doxy for now..last few months went from 200mg to 100mg.. make a long story short-getting lots of female issues from it (infections... u girls know what im talking about it).... going to see how my eyes fare off of it.. i can always get back on...

doc said if my facial rosacea flares i can take a topical like metrogel.. i already take clindaymycin..wonder if that helps rosacea..i dont get the bumps just redness after i wash and it goes away (with doxy i dont get that )

thanks.. anyone have to quit doxy??? i dont think its meant long term..at least not at 100mg.

My Dr said i still have dry eyes 4 months after doxy then quit it . if it hasn't helped it hasn't helped . so i did and feel fine only got a cold . Im trying azithromycin ointment instead .

Hey Jenny, are some of the girl problems thrush and UTI's? long terms doxy is not the best thing to be on. It kills all the microflora in your gut including all the "good bacteria". I've been on doxy at 100mg/day and have had no improvement at all. I'll quit it too since I don't like the idea of massacaring my intestinal system. I'd rather use an antibiotic locally as a drop.

I quit Doxy a few months ago after trying it for 4. I didnt really see any difference. My doc put me on minocycline 100 mg 2x a day.

soaps--are you using azasite?? i tried that but couldnt handle the preservative i guess.... i thought of trying it preservative free but my doc wasnt into it.. let me know if it helps ur mgd..

right now i am off of doxy completely... was on it for 5 years and before that tetracycline ointment for a few months which burned like crazy and was preservative free. go figure.....


and yes i am getting yeast infections which i dont normally get so i think its from the long term doxy and i do take probiotics...

do some of you not take doxy at all?? i am assuming people eventually get off of it.. i am not sure if it helped as my glands are always super clogged anyway..
and right now im trying the prog/test eye drops from leiters.

I think that minocycline is helping with the oil flowing more. When i express them it looks like mre pil is coming out. But my eyes don't fwel any better yet. I take 100 mg 2x a day

Hi all, I have been on and off of doxycyline for just over 3 years now. I started with 100 mg 2x a day for rosacea. The reason I went to the dermatologist was that I felt the rosacea was beginning to effect my eyes. (I have also been using Metrogel since that time.) After a month or so of being on the doxy and showing improvement, they lowered the dosage to just once a day. 6 months into treatment, I was going on vacation to the Caribbean and the doctor instructed me to stop the doxy due to issues with sun sensitivity. I stopped it 2 weeks prior to my trip. Well on the plane ride back, I felt like I had sand in my eyes. Went to the eye doctor and was diagnosed with a corneal abrasion, my first of many to come. I was put back on the doxy and have taken many different dosages (40mg - 200mg). Now I am on Oracea (40mg) a day. It seems like whenever I went off the doxy, I would have a flare up. Here is what is written about Oracea on their website (and what was explained to me by my dermatologist):

Unlike traditional doses of doxycycline (antibiotic at doses that kill bacteria), the low-dose formulation of ORACEA® does not work by killing bacteria; instead it reduces the bumps and blemishes of rosacea because of its anti-inflammatory properties. That’s important because:

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition — not a bacterial infection
In clinical studies, ORACEA® has not been shown to contribute to antibiotic resistance


Unfortunately, Oracea is much more expensive than doxy, but my insurance plan covers it. I had to have surgery due to recurrent corneal erosions and have not had one since, however, I still have dry eye and I am very hesitant to discontinue the use of Oracea. Everything is a trade-off. I have been doing so well with my regimen right now, even though I still have some discomfort, that I don't want to change anything. I guess the short answer is it doesn't hurt to stop and see if there is any difference. You can always go back on it.

soaps ..so are you using preservative free azasite?? and then no doxy?? i have only been off of doxy for about a week so i will prob give it another 5 weeks tilmy next apt and see how my glands look.. it never did help keep the glands open (at least i dont think it did )..guess i will find out..

let me know if you are on azasite pres. free cause i have asked for this-tried reg azasite years ago but the preservative killed my eyes and i only usedit 2 days.. glad somethings helping..and if all else maybe minocycline could help if i need something.. i cant afford Oracea because of medicae -it would be put into the coverage gap within a few months.. eeeshhhh

Apparently, Oracea once a day is not very different from doxy 20mg twice daily. The graphs mentioned in the first link are in the second link. Oracea is 30mg doxy + 10 mg slow release doxy. Total 40mg doxy. If you take 20mg doxy twice daily, it would have a similar effect. The cost of Oracea is not justified.

Doxy has made a difference for me I think..but lately my lids havent been looking so good ...they have been inflammed for six weeks now and have never been inflammed that long! i might do a short course of Lotemax..I really want to try Azasite but it is not approved in Canada...The U.S gets everything lol

also when i read that about the us.. i thought -but in canada the rx's are so much cheaper--at least that is what i heard! ahhh..healthcare is frustrating no matter what!
