  • Anyone recommend drops for short TBUT

    Hi there,
I have tried numerous drops and find that they all end up leaving my eyes feeling like they have a sticky tape on them.

I am 9 weeks post lasik. I have a short 2 sec. TBUT and I suspect I am producing few basal tears. I don't have any obvious MGD, but I don't see any oil when I try to express the glands. I yawn to wetten my eyes (or sometimes I cry). I have tried a number of Refresh drops, Bion TearsNaturale, Theratears, and Oasis Plus. The best is probably Oasis Plus, but that too feels sticky.

    Please advise.

I can only speak for myself but the drops ended up making me feel worse. I gave up on them after a while. I think they can become addictive in a way. I don't use any drops at all, just Genteal Gel at night.

Also you typically won't be able to see what's coming out of your MGs unless you have some very powerful equipment at your disposal. The gland openings are miniscule. If you don't see oil, don't panic.

      short TBUT drops

supposedly systane balance and soothe xp are for patients with short TBUT secondary to MGD.

Aqueous deficiency can cause short TBUT to I think.

bella, since you are kind of early in the game for MGD, try to get on top of it now if you can because in a year (where I am) it is really really an uphill battle...

Is systane balance available PF? Itried a sample with preservative and it was ok, but not great. I think my main problem is aqueous deficiency at this point. When I cry I notice more tears coming out of right eye and few in the other eye. I don't think I produce many tears even with firm blinking. One thing I've noticed recently is that my eyes feel somewhat sticky around my lashes. I have been taking a lot of fish oils and my face just seems oilier in general so maybe it is due to that. I thought that perhaps it was oil from my meiobian glands. I'm seeing a specialist tomorrow so I hope to have more answers.

Yes. Gel-type drops are supposed to be better when you have an evaporative problem (which leads to short TBUT), if I use anything I'd choose Systane (over viscotears). Best to use sparingly to avoid it spilling over or making eyes too sticky.

When looking at MGs, best to use a small torch as it can be quite difficult to see without a good light source, and practice on lower lids as they are much easier to see and express to begin with (hopefully your specialist will examine them and assess them for you).

            Systane Balance Restorative Formula

My opth recommended Systane balance restorative formula which supposedly helps to restore lipid layer. I was told that there was clogging in some Meib gland openings. also have serious reduction of aqueous layer, especially in one eye which has already produced scratches/abrasions on cornea. This particular drop is, for me, very easy to wear. Have had no side effects and it is very comfortable. Whether it will produce desired results remains to be seen as I have only just started using it. For me, there is no sticky or gummy feeling and zero irritation to my eyes from it.Many other drops that I use for day wear have been very irritating to my eyes.

Obviously, this is my personal response to it and everyone is different. May not be the answer to all my problems but so far, it is one part of the treatment that is totally easy to take and deal with. Just wanted to mention that my DES eyes are not as a result of lasik or contact lens use ever.
