  • Proper way of applying eye drops

    Hi All,

    After applying eye drops

Q1.) are we suppose to close the eyes for 30secs-60secs for the eyes to fully absorb?

Q2.) If using multiple eye drops, what is the recommended interval in between? I was told by my dry-eye specialists to use 5mins.

    Much appreciated

    Cheers

One of my specialists says a full 2 minutes with eyes closed after application of drops. Since I started doing it, it definitely makes a difference. I just wish he'd told me earlier and not acted like I was the idiot when he did mention it; after all, it's not like we're born knowing how to deal with a crappy, chronic issue like this. Most people put drops in and go on with their lives.

As far as intervals, my specialist (the one above) had me wait 5 or 10 minutes (I can't remember) between my commercial Restasis and application of other drops. My prescription from Leiter's (compounded Restasis w/o castor oil) says to wait at least 15. I tend to feel like it's better to err on the side of caution and would go with the 15.

When I started, 2 minutes seemed like an eternity and it sometimes still does. Since beginning acupuncture, I've started using those 2 minutes for breathing exercises, which is great when your life seems to revolve around administering eye drops. It's like a mini meditation. My doctor has me putting drops (serum) in every hour so there are times I can't close for the full 2 minutes (driving, on the go, etc) and then I just use Refresh Plus so I'm not wasting my serum drops but I've noticed they definitely don't last as long as when I can close for the full 2 minutes.
