This is nothing but a rant post, just so you know. There's very little constructive in here. No, scratch that, there's nothing constructive in here. Just an extremely frustrated guy who has come to the conclusion dry eye drops of any kind make your eyes WORSE over time.
Before I started using any drops, my dry eye was manageable. Annoying, but manageable. I'd get pain and the dry feeling alot of the time, but if I forgot about it or just gave my eyes a break for 30 minutes or so it would usually get better a bit. Then I started using Systane.. it felt okay but just didn't last anywhere near long enough.. so from there went on to Thera Tears... from there I took the usual path of obsessively collecting dry eye drops, in the process spending about $400-$500. I've tried every dry eye drop OTC that you can get here in Australia.
And I regret it. My eyes are worse now. Every single drop I've tried has been pure crap. They all do *exactly* the same thing. They relieve nicely for about 20-30 minutes, then you get this feeling of the drop 'drying up' in your eye and it feels worse. So much worse. Especially the gel-type drops which dry up into a lovely disgusting crusty layer so you look like you have leprosy or something to your work colleagues. So you need to put more drops in to make it feel normal again. It's just a terrible cycle.
So, the moral of this story is, if you have moderate dry eye and are thinking of going on the quest for the ultimate eye drop, don't do it. Just try plugs or something. Drops are baaaaad. My personal experience of course, they must work for some people. But then there must be some out there who are like me.
BTW, the only drops I haven't tried are the specialised ones from America like Dwelle, Dr. Holly's drops, Restasis, etc. I doubt they would be any different at all though.
