  • cyclosporin

I started using cyclosporin in an ointment format 3 weeks ago once a day at night. I find it comfortable to use - no stinging - but I still have to put Poly Gel or Genteal Gel in during the night. I feel I have had some improvement especially in the evenings when my eyes used to just want to stay shut without continuous use of drops(esp. when I was at the computer!). I have been able to go out and go without drops for about 2 1/2 hours. But I always wear my glasses. My Dr said my eyes are looking normal (I have lower plugs) but they do not feel like they were before Lasik(13 months ago) but they are better than anytime since Lasik and I am hoping!!! Dwelle stings my eyes but I have found it gives better comfortable vision and a longer time without drops if I put it in before I have a shower (and the shower takes away the sting).

Dotanne, is this an ointment formulated by a compounding pharmacy? Could you elaborate please on the "cyclosporine ointment"? Others may know, but I don't

That is good news. Here's hoping you are well on the road to a comfortable/tolerable "norm."

      cyclosporin ointment

      Hi Lucy
Yes - this is a 0.2% cyclosporin opthalmic ointment made up by a compounding chemist in Auckland. The eye specialist ordered it and I received instructions by phone from the chemist on how to use it. It comes in 1 ml applicators(like a syringe) and 0.1 ml is applied to each eye each night. I don't think we can get Restasis here yet. This seems this is a good alternative.
I'm noticing that my eyes aren't so bad at the computer tonight too - no drops needed yet - AND we have had an awesome bright clear sunny DRY NZ day - around 20 DEG C. and we have been to our granddaughter's 7th birthday (mostly outdoors)so the eyes have had a busy day! The air conditioning in our vehicle (4 hours driving today) is still a bother though! I get a burning dry feeling in the back of my nose even with goggles on.
However I am feeling much happier!
      Cheers all

        Nasal passage pain

        Dotanne,
What do you mean by a burning pain in the back of your nose. I am having a terrible time with one side of my nose and the left eye. The left eye aches and burns and so does the whole left side of my nose,it drives me crazy... This is the side I had a punctal plug inserted and irrigated out through the lacrimal system. I am glad to hear that New Zealand is so wonderful right now ,cant say the same for NY. Glad the cyclosporin seems to be helping you.
Glad that you are having some terrific days.
        Thanks for your updates. Peggy

          Nasal passage burning

          Hi Peggy
I have a lot of trouble with a burning inflamed pain in my nasal passages in the back of my nose. My left eye(my driest eye) aches too when things get dry. I have lower plugs but when the Lasik Dr put temporary plugs in my upper lids(last May) the pain got worse (and I got sore at the outside edges of my eyes) so I did not go further with plugs. It feels as though what tears get through the upper ducts are very concentrated and maybe cause the 'burning'. I am OK when I get up but it gets worse through the day and then improves in the evening. The pain goes at night.
The day after I wrote my last post, it was really bad and I was thinking the cyclosporin ointment had made it worse but today it is a bit better. I feel if I could get rid of that discomfort I would feel just about back to normal.
The Dr says my eyes look normal but they still seem to feel dry. He couldn't help with the nasal pain. Said I would need to ask a ear, nose and throat man.
Does anyone else know what causes this? Does anyone else get this problem? I resort to thick drops, steam, hot compresses and Dwelle before a shower to help this but it is no fun when away from home. My steroid drops semed to help too but I only use them when I am desperate. I stopped using them when I started the cyclosporin.
Thank you for your input Peggy.

            cyclosporin and burning nasal passages

I had so much trouble with the inflamed nasal passages that I stopped using the cyclosporin ointment 6 days ago and my nose is feeling a lot better. I had swabs taken and there is no candida but do not have the total story from my GP yet. My eyes must have been irritated with the cyclosporin too as I can now use Dwelle and Dakrina without the stinging I used to get. So it is back to the poor man's Restasis!
