  • Sulfactamide sodium opthalmic solution drops

Hi. I suffer from severe dry eye and bleph for the last year. I am on my 7th opthamologist and have only gotten worse. This one is a lid specialist opthamologist. Anyhow he drained my tear ducts and then prescribed this drop for 3 times daily. Also he said my eye/ear pain is from the blockage I have in my nose and it is going up into my eyes and ear causing the pressure. He gave me patanase spray for the nose. Well two days later I had more eye pain and pressure so I went in again and he said the eyes were looking better but my nose is very blocked so in addition he gave me omnaris spray. He said with the drops and spray to play around with the amounts and I can stop any if I feel it is bothering me but still try the 3 times a day drops and 2 times of each nose spray. Well I have been struggling with this for a year and have been on a dozen diffeent drops and orals but nothing helps so I tried to stick with the regimine. Well yesterday and today have been horrible. Basically I feel like my head is going to explode from the pressure, dizzy and I had the severe eye pressure/ear. In addition I am seeing weird not that I can't see words but more like not focusing and I had told him how my floaters are more but those also have been checked but I feel like they have increased even more on this regimine. So I didn't use anything since this morning and finally some of the edge is coming off. Any ideas? I want help and the before was horrible that is why I am on my 7th eye doc and I would say more then 35 apts but the past few days I can barely take it and my sight is scaring me. Thanks for listening

Other than eye doctors, what others have you been to? I am asking because I have gone to several different specialists over the past six months and have no diagnosis of the dry eye. I, too, have the pressure, dizziness, etc and a lot of other symptoms which nobody has been able to link. However, I still keep trying....

Have you tried an ENT doctor. Perhaps the other symptoms are related to your sinuses. I learned this only after being told I was having continuous panic attacks (days at a time). Finally, I complained enough that the doctor ran a Ct of my sinuses and sure enough there was a sinus infection, which I have been battling with antibiotics on and off for three months.

Just a thought. What does your primary care doctor think?

      Hi Gina J
This ophthalmologist does not sound as though he is using the conventional treatments for DES
Since it seems to be making you worse, I think if i were you, i would stop the treatment, and go back to tried and trusted methods like eyelid hygiene and occular lubricants - and experiment only within those limits to see if you can at least improve things
Maybe you should leave your eyes /nose/ears alone for a while until they settle down from all these drops -
      What is your original diagnosis?

Thanks for your replies. I have other health issues so have been under a lot of care and am going to a new PM doctor this week for that issue though they feel it is not connected to my eyes. Who knows. Anyhow I have been to rheumotolgist,gp,allergist, dermatologist, many eye doctors, next week an ear nose/throat/doc,a couple PM docs. Before the eyes happened I had recently had mris down with a neuro but want to see about them getting repeated. Anyhow the reason this eye doctor is going a different way with treatment I think is because I have had the eye condition for a year and have been to 6 opthamologist before. I had tried oral anti biotics, drops, steriods, temp plugs, restasis etc. All I know is I did stop the eye drops and nose spray because I could not take the side effects and today has been better then the past few days. Of course I still have worse then when I went to see him but not like the past few days. I do keep up with the eye foam scrub, warm compresses, ocd preservative free, humidifier etc. I am not sure what my next step is at this point. I think no more eye docs for awhile. I am going back to the gp because I need blood work redone so will see and maybe the eye doc is right that the blockage from my nose is causing a lot of eye pain and ear but I don't know and I am not sure why that would make my eyes so dry and with bleph I think that is seperate still. Ok now thanks

          Hi Gina,
I have started suffering from headaches, dizziness, pressure, some ear ache & light & sound sensitivity over the past 2 wks, its been pretty awful.
I wondered if these symptoms were linked to my dry eyes, but my Dr diagnosed me with migranes and benign vertigo for which she prescribed imitrex & meclizine. I suffered from the vertigo symptoms about 2yrs ago, prior to my dry eye diagnosis, but the dizziness was MUCH milder than now and it subsided after about a month.
My dr thinks it's even more likely as I am at the age when migranes start, 30yrs.
I will be getting my new drugs tomorrow and will let you know how they go.
          Suneet.

Hi. I am sorry I didn't see this reply and I am sorry you face this as well. What meds did your doc put you on if I may ask? I went to the PM doc for my other conditions and he felt I need to go back to the neurologist for a brain mri possibly and to get back on the nerve meds which is also for my leg condition. I know topomax is a used drug for migraines. I do have fluid in my ear but it is not being helped with the meds and the fluid in my nose. I will let you know too what happens. Hang in there and I hope you are feeling better
