  • Plugs for moderate dry eyes

    hi there,
Iv had accutane induced dry eye for nearly 6 months now and asked my doctor about plugs for my eyes.He said plugs would probably make my eyes overly teary and the tears would sting my skin and stuff. He says i have moderate dry eye features(although it certainly feels worse).
What id like to know is if my eyes would feel replenished despite the excess tearing?Or would it make them feel worse?Im quite confused so any help is very much appreciated.
    Thanks

Try the collagen 2-3 day plugs first. If that offers relief try the 90 day dissolvable plugs. If those offer relief then look into long term plugs.

      Thanks.
So there is no way of knowing whether excess tearing would make ones eyes feel worse or better?

      Cheers

Excess is relative I guess. More tears would certainly help your eyes feel better. When you say excess, I think of tears running out of your eyes all the time. That is bothersome to most, however my wife tolerated it for some time because her eyes felt better. We ad a great selection of ladies hankies.

yes, that what he said, the tears would just run down my face and burn my skin(i have very sensitive skin).

I read there that a corneal specialist put a time frame of 2-4 years for accutane dry eye patients to recover.Think ill wait as long as possible but if things dont improve soon ill try temp plugs.
          Thanks

I have very sensitive skin, particularly under my eyes and when I got temporary plugs, at first I did experience some overtearing that was irritating to the thin skin there, it was like a burning sensation. But, given the dry eye relief, it was completely worth it. It seems everything to do with treating DES has pros and cons either way. My eyes felt better, but I had to baby my skin a little, not rub or wipe it too hard and apply a hypoallergenic moisturizer each night so the skin would restore overnight. I would recommend you go ahead with temporary plugs and see what you think. They do dissolve in a short period of time if you're not happy with the side effects. Wish you all the best!

I had excess tearing from a plug (epiphora) for some time before I finally got fed up with the constant running down my face and had the thing removed. My tear composition was such that the excess tears did NOT make my eye feel better. Much depends on the cause of your DES and the composition of your tears.
Every day with DES is like a box of chocolates...You never know what you're going to get.
