  • Size of puncta - general question

    Just a quick question.

When my doc tried to insert plugs recently, my left eye accepted a 0.6mm plug but she commented that the punctal openings in my right eye were 'tiny'.

It just made me think, if the puncta are really small, surely less tears would drain away anyway - or at least take longer to do so? Its just that my right eye is always the worst symptom wise, whereas you would expect the left one to be worse because the puncta are bigger and therefore the tears will drain away faster?

30% of people have different size puncta. It is not unusual in those people to have one puncta two sizes smaller than the other. The puncta are only the openings to the lacrimal drainage system. Your canaliculus actually works similar to your intestine in that a peristolic motion is what moves the tears out of the mensicus.
