  • Pyogenic granuloma/smartplugs

Just read about this in the dry eye digest - wow, something else for me to worry about now - like I don't do enough of that!!

Seriously though - I know its only a couple of people that this has been reported in but it is a bit of a worry.

When I had plugs (my pre-cautery days), I got a pyogenic granuloma. I came out of the shower and saw blood in my eye (not usually a good sign, I figured).

Got looked at. They said it was a pyogenic granuloma. I checked the literature. Yup. Sure enough, it can be associated with punctal plugs (don't recall which kind I had).

The guy basically snipped it off (yikes!) and gave me some antibiotic drops for a few days. Never thought about it again.

Not sure what can be done to prevent them. Only other thing I recall is that he said "pyogenic granuloma" is a misnomer--that it is neither 'pyogenic,' NOR a 'granuloma.'

    I slept better knowing that
