  • Plug concern

I have a silicone plug in my left eye which has been there for about 3/4 months now. It has irritated on and off such as when you look across your nose etc. I saw the doctor today (not the one who put it in - he was unavailable) and he said it was sticking up slightly. I actually wanted it taking out but he didnt want to do this and just pushed it back into position.

The thing is, before, the plug was always slightly raised so I could see it quite clearly but now it seems 'flush' to the eyelid and Its much harder to see. It is a clear silicone so its not as obvious as the white coloured ones. Plus I can't feel it at all. Although it irritated a bit before, I felt relieved that I could feel it a bit as I knew it was still there - if that makes sense!

I am now worried that he may have pushed it in too far - Im sure I can still see it but wont this now make it really hard to remove if need be?

The other problem is my lower left eyelid has felt kind of swollen the last couple of weeks - it doesnt look it really, just feels 'puffy'. Can you suddenly develop an allergy to the silicone after having had them in a while already? I dont have this feeling in my left eye as I have a different kind of plug in it.
Plus its only the lower lid that feels this way - there is no redness or swelling around the plug site though, whereas I would have thought there would be if it was an allergic reaction to the plug.

Im always anxious when it comes to plug issues - I only have to hear one horror story about migrating plugs etc and thats all it takes to make me worry about it even more.

      Hi Susie
I just had a replacement plug put in my left eye last Friday and it felt sort of 'swollen' for a few days but it is fine now, and it doesn't irritate my eye like the first one did AND my eye feels heaps better. He put in an UltraPlug - .5mm Silicone Punctal Plug (from USA). He even gave me the packet after I was asking so much about what sort it was. The insertion was so much quicker than the plugs put in by the Lasik Dr. Just a few seconds and that was that! Previously I had to lie down in a separate room and he had an assistant (plus a student to watch too) and it seemed to take ages as he poked and prodded and my eyes got dry and they had to put in drops. Yet this Dr thought the new one was the same as the other one in my right eye.
I do hope all is OK with your plug Suzie. I freak out about them too but my eyes are so much better with them. I sure know when one has come out!

Hi - yes I had to see a different a different doctor though. It had been pushed in and despite the fact they wanted to leave it alone, I insisted he try and remove it. This involved probing (slightly painful) and irrigation with saline. But Im pretty certain it has gone. Where to I dont know - hopefully my stomach.

So, I am plugless again (and dry!).

            Hi Susie,

Sorry, I didn't see this post before I responded to your private message, so just ignore that I guess. Sorry that your plug had been pushed in. I can't believe that the same thing happened to you! My doctor tried to say the same thing about just leaving it there, but I demanded she irrigate it out. Atleast it sounds like they got it out, but it stinks that you are back at square one again. I really hope you have a better experience if you try them again.
