Oops just realised I posted this in the archive yesterday:
Hi, wondering if anyone can help? - I was silicone plugged in my lower ducts only for the first time 2 and a half weeks ago. Initially I was told by a dry eye specialist that I have T cells under the lids and a short strong course of steroids was recommended to tackle that before moving onto plugs and restasis. For various reasons I wasn't able to start the steroids straight away. I've now seen a local corneal specialist, taking the steroids with me, he said no need to treat the inflammation as the eyes aren't red and he 'wasn't bothered' by the conjunctivochalasis, just to get the plugs in, do hot compresses for 2 months and he will then check for improvement and think about possible doxy and restasis. I am very bothered by the chalasis because I didn't have it at all 18 months ago and it seems to have suddenly got worse in the last 6 months, it's at the outsides of my corneas. My eyes still look white but there is a sort of jellyish / moist looking effect in the corners of my eyes which makes them look quite glistening and watery even though they're dry as a bone most of the time and if I look to the far side it forms a small but noticeable fold in each eye. Since having the plugs put in I have had a couple of mornings where the inside of the cornea has had the same effect, it feels like they've made it worse (I also think the outsides are worse for more of the time). The plugs do at least keep drops on the eye a bit longer but there's not a massive amount of improvement overall. I have between 0 and 2 on a Schirmer, lid margin disease, rosacea. Should the inflammation have been treated first? Would it be ok to use strong steroids with the plugs in or does it really have to be before they go in and also, I have read that plugging makes chalasis worse - this may be my biggest worry because it seems to be getting worse so much worse recently and I don't want to do something which will add to it and might meand I have to have an eyeball 'facelift' at some point, I'm still fairly young. Given the plugs don't do a massive amount without restasis, should I just have them removed, one is scratching anyway? Thanks for any replies.
