  • Smart plugs not for bottom puncta?

Not sure where I read this but I am sure that someone put a thread on where he said Smart plugs are not recommended for bottom puncta. If so does anyone know why this should be so?

I think it depends on opinion rather than fact.

      Hi all,

I did ask my eye doc and (subject to my terrible memory!), it was to do with gravity having that extra pull on the plug and also that on the upper punctum there is a tight corner that it would have to navigate so it kinda holds it back. Also, Smartplugs don't enlarge enough even to fully seal on the lower punctum, they will still let some tears flow.

However, ask the NHS and they will tell you they are fine for lowers.

One of my lower SmartPlugs has gone.

      Ian.

        Hi,
Just my 2¢ here, but smart plugs were the dumbest thing I ever did.
Somewhere in my lacrimal system sits a smart plug, which now causes me dacrocystitis.
The only option left for me,
( I have been irrigated and probed,)
is having surgery, which does not have a great success rate.

i think your best bet is plugs that dosolve after 6 months. Ok its more expensive but if they work its worth it and they dont have to be irrigated out, if they dont its not. I personaly think smart plugs are overrated.
