Hello All,
I am not really one to post, but I thought some may find this to be useful. For some quick background. I developed photophobia after wearing ortho-k lenses for one day , but I had no pain. A year later I started having pain in my eyes. I just come off Restasis for about a week, and I had been taking Viva drops and msm drops for about two weeks. I went back to the doctor who had prescribed the Restasis for the photophobia and dry eye, and he immediately inserted lower plugs, and I recontinued the restasis. I was never quite comfortable with this, but he's a doctor.
I got a second opinion from Dr. Latkany, and we decided to continue with the treatment for a while, but he said he believed I had allergies, and to get tested. I did get tested, and it came back that I did have allergies, mainly indoor, so I started allergy shots. Do I believe that allergies are the reason for discomfort, not entirely, but I think there is alot of validity to what he is saying, based on what happened next. On Christmas, my right lower plug started to come out. Instead of having it pushed back in, I told the doctor to take it out because I wanted to compare, and see if I felt any differently in each eye.
There really wasn't a consistent difference. Some days the eye without the plug felt better, some days the eye with the plug felt better. But I did notice that when the eye without the plug felt better, it felt naturally better. I also noticed that between January and February, my eyes started to get watery and burn. Symptons I never had before. When I went back for my follow-up visit with Dr. Latkany, and he saw the results of my allergy test, he told me to discontinue the restasis and have the other plug removed. I first discontinued the restasis. Immediately, the water eyes and burning went away. It has been about two weeks, and I do not have this problem any more.
The best part, is that I finally notice a true difference between the eye with the plug and the one without the plug. The eye without the plug, I am almost scared to say feels good, maybe normal (its been so long I forget what normal is). On the side of my face with the plug, I get headaches, my face tingles, and my eye sometimes itches. These are symptons that I complained about in earlier posts, on both sides of my face.
My conclusion, it is important to know why you are having discomfort, and get the right treatment. I think that I was wrongly given plugs, and the reason I never felt fully satisfied was because I had an underlying condition of allergies, and that is why my left eye feels worse. I will be getting that plug removed this week, and I am hopeful that that eye will start feeling as good as my right, and I might start feeling normal again soon, or at least a lot better.
By the way, the pain I initially had when I went to the doctor, lasted from August to about October, and was replaced by the watery eyes, burning, dry feeling, tired eyes, facial numbness, tingling, and headaches which alternated. All which added to my anxiety, but could have been side affects caused by the wrong treatment.
Who really knows, but you have to be patient. And in my trying to resolve the pain for approximately 7 months now I have learned, do not be so quick to start every treatment available under the sun. Establish a baseline, so you will know if something is really working or not.
