  • Reversing cauterization?

    Hi,

I had my lower ducts cauterized 6 months ago and that worked out fine. But I still had dry eye even though I was on Restasis and Doxy.

So I had my uppers cauterized 2 weeks ago. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!! My eyes are like a water faucet. I didn't think I had that much tear productivity. Plus the ducts are still very sore to the touch and red at the site of cauterization.

I have an appointment with my Optho on Friday to check for infection.

My question is how do they reverse it or the big question can they be reversed? Just the uppers.

I look my Grandma with tissue stuck up my sleeve all the time. LOL

    Any thoughts? Thanks,

    Hi Debbie,
It is usually not a good idea to get all four cauterized, especially in a short time as 6 months. That being said, do not think this is necessarily the outcome!

I've been plugged, quadra-plugged, unplugged, replugged, cauterized (one, and the whole gamut. It often takes weeks for things to settle down. Your eyes may feel weepy for awhile, but given a couple of months, they may be just right.

I'd say keep the appt with your dr and wait to see what happens later. I do not know if they can be undone. I think cauterization is to be thought of as a permanent procedure, although it can and does come undone.

Are the tears comfortable? If not, this might be reflex tearing due to some sort of irritation (infection, allergy, dry eye). I had that when I was quadruple plugged. Amazing enough, putting in drops stopped the constant sloshing.

        reversing cauterization

        Hi Debbie Z
My eye specialist has recently cauterized top and bottom in right eye (6 months between the two) as it was very dry and now it's a wee bit watery which makes me think there is some lacrimal function there. Only problem now is it's making my vision a bit blurry and that in turn leads to a headache but is it the lesser of two evils. As Lucy says, maybe it'll settle down in a month or so but he did assure me it can be reversed if necessary!! Also bottom left eye cauterised but I think I'll just stick with that one as my eye-sight wasn't too hot before all this malarkey and I want to be able to see reasonably clearly. I'll give it a fair go 'til my next check up.
Hope this is of some help.

          dripping

          hi...
you might need to wait a while to see the "final results"
in my case i have VERY dry eyes (shirmer 1) and so i got 4 plugs.
the first 5 weeks tears gushed out non-stop (i was in heaven!!)
now..in the 6th week it's often quite dry (unfortunately) and at other times relatively moist. all in all, i think the 4 plugs have helped me somewhat but the main issue is that you have to give it some time to see how it will work for you.
          hugs, betty
