  • Pain-free Restasis

Over the weekend, I rec'd my new prescription of compounded, mineral-oil-free Restasis. I put drops in earlier today and no pain. I could feel the medicine but not the severe stinging that generally accompanies administration of the drops. I haven't had much luck with Restasis working since my eye problems have gotten so much worse but I'm hopeful that without the mineral oil irritation, perhaps it might start working again, like it did when I was younger (it didn't hurt the way it does now either).

The place my new specialist likes to use (apparently the only place she trusts for it) is located in San Jose, CA, Leiters Pharmacy. It didn't take long for them to arrive (used regular mail) and a bottle cost about $51.70, including shipping. My doctor suggested I start with one bottle and if they don't irritate, to order more next time.

    Hi there,
Did u have the castor oil removed from the restasis? Some people say thats what causes the pain.I also had a major reaction to restasis.Intense burning that started maybe an hour after instillation and lasted all day.
Im seeing Dr L next month so migh ask him to write me a prescription for it.

      Hi
I was wondering what they use instead of the mineral oil as the base? I think I am allergic to mineral oil and castor oil. How are you doing on the drops? I am thinking about asking my doctor to call those in for me too.
      Thank you,
      Lea

This would be interesting to know too.

I tried the UK version of Restasis - Cyclosporine - and I had a dreadful reaction to it. I think it was the petrolatum base that was the main cause of the problem but it could have been other things too.

I am getting cyclosporine made up for me at the chemist today. I live in Australia and RESTASIS is not available. I hope I do not get any side effects from it. I will be documenting my experience with these drops on my blog: http://www.myredeyes.com.au. Does anyone know if they help reduce inflammation?

I had cyclosporin drops made for me in Melbourne last year and they hurt SO much, I fainted. And if that wasn't bad enough, the pain lasted for 22 hours. This is coming from someone who's had leukemia twice, a BMT, 2 corneal grafts and 2 cataracts removed. Hope I didn't scare ya!!

Any idea why Restassis isn't available in Oz?
