Ok, I have gone to some extremely good eye doctors. 4 in particular I feel are among the best in the country as far as dry eye is concerned. Although I think Dr. Latkany, who I haven't seen is probably leaps and bounds ahead of them.
Each one of them, even ones suffering from and having complete control of their condition reccomend restasis. From what I have seen it seems like Dr. Latkany prescribes it too.
Now there seems to be alot of controversy over the product. Some saying it disrupts the mucin layer(or something there about), some saying it increases inflammation and even more saying it decreases it. Of course that is all in relation to the castor oil. I'm sure most will agree the cyclosporin is therapuetic.
So the tipping point for me seems to be the discrepancy between all of these negative claims and the fact that alot of well respected doctors prescribe this.
I have a guess on why this would be and would like some input from people who have been wondering this same thing.
I think that castor oil can add inflammation and may even be toxic but I think what most doctors think is that it serves as a 2 fold medicine. Where in if the patient uses it as directed then over time it will (the castor oil) actually decrease inflammation. I think it might even be theraputic for blepharitis. It seems it is just not talked about because of the initial inflammation it causes, the controversy and the phenomenon of it showing toxicity but at the same time curing (and I use that losely) people of this disease.
So I think it is one of those unexplained things(they don't understand the exact mechanism of how it works but it does) that seems to keep some people symptom free if they are on restasis and doing evertying else. I.E. hygeine, exercise, compresses, some what conscience of diet, artificial tears, keep skin disease at bay, ect.
Now I have learned that you really have to be on your toes when it comes to this stuff because medicine that seems like something perfectly safe, intended to help your condition can in fact worsen it. Doxycycline is a perfect example of this.
So my advice is listen to your doctor but sometimes you have to pay attention to detail and be very apprenhsive when it comes to your health.
The other conclusion I have come to is they're pharamceutical drones (I mean that with the upmost respect) and they have financial interest in prescribing restasis. BTW I could be completely off here but figured I would post the idea and see what others thought.
Thoughts and comments plz
