  • Sclerals - insertion and storage

    Hi,

I'd love any tips on getting Sclerals in, I was fine when I did handling at the optician but I have deteriorated it takes me a lot of tries now to get them in, I seem to not get them right at the top and then they jam against my eyelid the problem is because I use drops (saline fogs very quickly for me) this will get expensive with having to keep filling and trying!!

Also if you have any tips on storage, I have been told to dry store but I'm still a bit concerned, not so much that the advice was wrong but that with sensitive dry eyes I feel like I could easily get infections, I'm not sure if dry store is enough. I clean them before and after the storage - does this sound enough without disinfecting?

    Thanks for any thoughts!

I remember going through a couple of periods after first getting my lenses when I had trouble getting at least one of them in. I just had to push through it and eventually the problem went away. Still not sure why it was but I remember getting frustrated and worried a few times especially since in the very beginning I did not have that problem. Looking back now, I think it was partly skill development and partly maybe one lid was a bit inflamed so it was hard to get it completely open.

The way I was trained (though to be honest I've never done it this way) was to put a mirror on the counter and be looking straight down at it while moving the inserter up onto the eye.

As regards storage, this may vary depending on lens types so I'd go with whatever you're told by your provider. I store mine in hydrogen peroxide. With HP you're supposed to use neutralizing tablets. When I don't have tablets I just am very very careful about rinsing them very thoroughly.

Thank you! will try it out. will also ponder the storage, I think I may use a mild disinfectant solution (one I was given there for intra-day cleaning) once in a while but otherwise leave storage as what I was told then.
