  • New to forum - not sure I have "Dry Eyes"

Hi! I am a 64-year-old male living in Ohio, United States. I was diagnosed with kerataconus thirty years ago, but successfully wore rigid, gas-permeable corneal lenses until a couple of years ago. At that time, I began to suffer bouts of photophobia - sometimes severe enough to require me to pull off the road while driving. Six months ago, a new eye doctor fitted me with scleral lenses. They immediately and completely eliminated the photophobia. Now, however, I am having difficulty with what I believe is mucous build-up in the tears that are captured by the scleral lenses. Sometimes I can wear the lenses for up to eight hours without any problems, but sometimes it is only 30 minutes or so before the lenses cloud up badly enough that I cannot see.

I found this site by searching the Internet on words such as "sceral lenses" and "kerataconus." There is a string on this site in which a writer expresses a similar problem to mine, but the posting is a couple of years old now. What I am looking for is an understanding of how scleral lenses really work (fluid flow, etc.) and what this cloudy fluid really is - so that I can learn how to mitigate the problem and extend the time that I have clear vision.

I apologize, in advance, if my post is inappropriate for this site - but it's the only place so far that I have found mention of anything similar to my problem. Thank you!
