  • Insurance coverage of medically necessary contact lenses

I just learned that my vision care plan covers medically necessary contact lenses in FULL. The catch is (at least with my insurance company), I must obtain the lenses from a provider who participates in their plan. They will pay only a small portion of it, if the lenses are made by the company/doctor who doesn't participate in the plan. The lenses do not need to be called a prosthetic device (like those from BFS) to be eligible. For many of us, the cost of the scleral lenses is prohibitively high. Those of you considering trying the lenses, it may be worthwhile to look into getting a vision plan. Unfortunately, Dr. G is not a participating provider for my plan, so I was unable to get the cost of his lenses reimbursed.
