  • Scleral lens gets dirty?

    Hi all,
In just ordered a pair of sclerals in a try to survive my struggle with my evaporative dry eyes (MGD/blepharitis). I've been through the fitting process and experienced the comfort of the trial lens great. But... my vision was not perfect. The lens got greasy and dirty after two hours of wearing them. The doctor told me that we can try different solutions to fill them to address this problem. Who is recognizing this poblem? How did you deal with it?

Probably depends somewhat on the type of lens. Is this a BSL?

Having a slightly viscous solution to fill the lens can help inhibit getting crud under the lens. I've been using Dwelle, some others use Celluvisc.

A plasma coated lens wets better than non-coated lenses.

Also, what products are you using overnight? If you are wearing sclerals in the day you should not be using ointment at night - it will always cause this problem.

Whoops, just saw your other post and that you are at BFS. Yes, the lens filling makes a big difference as I mentioned. I mentioned type of lens because the other designs (fenestrated lenses etc) can present different issues than the BSLs.

        sclerals

        Hi Rebecca,
        Thanks for your prompt reply!!
I ordered my sclerals via Visser Contactlenzen since I live in Europe. BFS/Dr. Rosenthall recommended me this supplier of sclerals, they have a high reputation in applying sclerals. I will try those fillings you mentioned. I'm not sure about the coating. I remember something that my doctor said that plasma treatment was already outdated? I keep you posted about my experiences.

          Oh sorry - I misunderstood.

I think there may be other potential factors in addition to the lens 'filling' like...

Lens design. Is it a fenestrated lens? And from my earlier days with corneal-scleral lenses, fit played a noticeable role with deposits.

Coating. Plasma coating is definitely not outdated. I've heard some misinformation going around some fitters about this - as regards how long it lasts etc. But this coating can be key for dry eye patients.

Cleaners!!! Go for Lobob extra strength or Miraflow extra strength daily cleaner and make sure to clean them very thoroughly.

I also have the fogging problem. I'm very happy with my sclerals! They improve my dry eye condition a lot!
But the fogging is bothersome, espacially when I'm working on the computer.
Do you know a good solution to fill the lenses which I can get in Germany/Europe?
Dwelle isn't available in Germany. I have found a company that sells Celluvisc:
            http://www.juvalis.de/index.php?part...Nummer=4145379
Is that the celluvisc that you are using? I know, you don't speak German :-) but there is a picture on the site which can be zoomed. Can you tell me if that drops are the right ones? (I just want to make sure because some drops have the same name in germany but are different from the drops you get in the US. Genteal for example is in Germany totally different)
            Thank you very much!

Hi susie, I actually get my favourite drops from Germany, have you tried Artelac Advanced and Vidisic? You could try those in the sclerals. I've been trying something called Vislube and Vismed in mine. - which I order from the UK. Celluvisc didn't work for me -> fogging was as bad as saline (- didn't find Celluvisc better than Artelac either)

I think you can try all kinds of drops and see. I've been trying Vislube/Vismed as they have something that deters mucus, or so I understood. But I'm going to try my regular drops too, soon.

                Hi Stanza,
thanks for your reply. You use Artelac? These drops are great but very expensive. I only use them when I go to a party and didn't want to take a bag with me. Than I take one or two from the separate packed Artelacs boxes which I can put in the bag of my trousers.
                But normally I use Hylocomod:
                http://www.docsimon.com/article/hylo...-solution-10ml
Hylocomod is as good as Artelac, is preservative free via a special pumping mechanism and costs only 8,50 Euro. One bottle lasts nearly a month. Can you get Hylocomod in the UK?
Meanwhile I fill my sclerals with saline and the don't fog. The trick is cleaning them very accurate with miraflow and storing them in saline, and not in this dry box which you get from Ken.
I have found lens boxes which are large enough for the scleral lenses:
                http://www.alibaba.com/product-free/...Frog_Case.html

But sadly I recognized that my visus isn't so good with the lenses. I can't drive my car with them and I think there is at least one diopter missing. I already wrote to Ken, he told me that he will take a look at my lenses and that he probably will increase the power of my lenses. So I have to go to Kens in a few weeks, than he'll take my lenses with him and in 1-2 month I'll get my new lenses :-/ Thats sad but better than wearing two lenses which don't have the required power.

I wish you good look with your lenses, perhaps you can solve the fogging problems with my suggestions:-)

I haven't found them expensive but I have to get all my drops online so I may not know any better. I buy them in big boxes from here http://shop.bodfeld-apotheke.de/prod...ductNr=4479063 I only use the Advanced ones, I hated the normal ones. Vidisic is their 'gel' version, also pres free and avail in big boxes. I switch with that as my eyes also get sore when I use the same drops continuously.

I'm going to try the saline storage (in the cute boxes ) and just use Kens box for travel as it keeps them sort of pinned in.

I think it's worth trying. Not sure I can wear them with saline though but I may try again in a while.

Shame about your powers. One of mine is too strong, means it's hard to work at PC but otherwise it is fine for distance for me. Maybe he can look at your fit if you go there too - with the thing that it's sucking onto your eye, I have the feeling that isn't bad in itself but the bloodshot thing after is.

                    Hi Stanza,
your right, when you buy Artelac online, then they aren't that expensive. I also buy the Artelac advanced. Once I bought accidentally the normal ones and I fount them awful. They burned in my eyes and didn't bring any improvement.
But I recommend you to try Hylocomod too. These drops are as good as Artelac and very practical because you don't need so many small plastic boxes but only one box which lasts almost a month. The shop from which you get your artelac also has Hylocomod, double pack for 16 Euro and single pack for 11 Euro:
                    http://shop.bodfeld-apotheke.de/produkte/suche.html

Yeah I love the cute frog boxes:-) These boxes are the only ones which you can use for scleral lenses. All the other ones are too small for them.

that sucking onto your eye thing isn't that bad but it troubles me. i worry that this isn't a good sign. perhaps our eyes are too dry for the lenses? The sucking onto the eyes must have to do something with the dryness. Because when I got dry eyes I first recognized this thereby that my soft contact lenses where sucked onto my eyes. Fortunatly sucked soft lenses aren't that painful as hard lenses :-)

I'm curios if any other scleral wearers have the same experiences? Rebecca.. you are a very successful scleral wearer... Do your lenses suck onto your eyes sometimes? Is that a bad sign or quite normal?

I'll definitely try Hylocomod next time I order. Sounds good! I also had that with soft lenses too. I know what you mean.

@Stanze: Have you get the hylocomod yet? Are you content with it?

@all: I have a great advice for all who have problems with the clouding: I bought the progent cleaner and since then, me lenses aren't clouded anymore. I don't know, if I have to use it every time before wearing the sclerals. I used it yesterday and had no clouding.
