  • was doing great & then i tried contacts yest. need help. big mistake

ok so i have sjogrens and mgd.. i have been doing a lot better the past few months--of course i have cautery and plugs but tears had been running down my cheeks-not complaining.

so i went to my optometrist-reg checkup and he suggested i try ciba vision dailies total1- well wore them 4 hours-no problem..took them out just in case-didnt want to rock the boat-and was good for about 5 hours and out of nowhere my eyes got so dry , then burning like heck-used lotemax ointment-took the edge off but not much-went to bed. i woke w/ the same issues-went to my doc's office & they were all out today (my corneal specialist that is).. my reg optometrist said on the phone he didnt know if it wsa the contacts or what?

could this just be a sjogrens flare or do you think i caused the flare up by putting in lenses into dry sjogren/mgd eyes-even tho they felt great.. I think it is odd that they didn't react until 4 hours later that is why i don't think it was a contact allergy. i didnt use solution.. the contacts say that they have

"phosphatidylcholine in buffered saline w/ polymeric wetting agents".. could i be allergic to this? and if i was wouldnt i have felt the allergy while wearing the lenses or at least right when i took them out???

going to the eye doc tmro if not better.. my eyes feel like glue and burn so bad.. i know Bak isn't in the contacts..
any suggestions or help? i am so confused... i do wonder if just having a contact lay on my eye deprived it with oxygen and finally hours later flared up??? thank you so much to anybody with any thoughts or suggestions!!1
    love
    karen

I haven't been diagnosed with Sjogrens but my eye doc gave me samples of those exact same contacts and I had the same result as you. I could get a few hours wear out of them and then the next few days my eyes were far worse - way drier then usual. I assumed it was just the wearing of the lenses causing the increased dryness. I definitely won't be wearing them again. It's not worth it to me to have my eyes feel worse the days after wearing them. (I've tried them five times now thinking that each other time what happened might have been a fluke, but I've had the same results every time.)

I had the same reaction when I tried a contact in ONE eye!! I thought if only I could wear a lens in one eye I could get along without my glasses. I have tried in the past and had the same reaction only mine started right after I removed the lens. This time I gave myself a 7 month break and tried again and got so nervous that I removed them after 1 hour. Guess what? My eye bothered me the rest of the day!

I have several different brands of lenses and I notice that they all have a different "water content." I have read that the higher the water content the more your eye uses that moisture and the lens ends up sticking to the eyeball. Anyone heard this? So, some of the lenses for "dry eye" would actually be worse.

Yes, abbygirl - I've read that about the higher water content lenses and my doc told me about it too. These new Total 1 lenses are supposed to not allow your eyes to suck up any moisture from the lens and should therefore supposedly be better for dry eyes. I suppose if you only have mild dry eye they might work.

(I have a friend who is always talking about how she has such dry eyes too [whenever I say something about mine] - yet she can wear contacts 14 hrs a day everyday, never uses drops, and has no punctal plugs.)

I want to shake her and say "Ya right yours are just as dry as mine - NOT". It's really frustrating.... people just don't understand.

The Total 1 lens site has more info about the "benefits" of its new technology.

hey gals.. thank you soooo much for replying!!!! well i will not be trying anymore contacts.. my eyes finally feel better .. but yeah i know about people who say their eyes are dry and they keep their contacts in--i tell them-"take out your contacts and they wont be dry".duh.. makes me so mad.. and then i explain alot of days i feel like ive got 2 or 3 lenses in each eye and can't get them out !

wow.. i am too scared to try any lens at all.. i have sjogrens and mgd and am plugged and cauterized.. i had no business doing that to my pore eyes. errr
Abby was yours a different type of lens then the one we tried by Ciba?

I too thought sense they didn't hurt right away it couldn't have been the lenses but now it seems it had to have been.. the docs didnt know for sure but told me no more lenses (these are docs that didn't give me the lenses).. thanks again for helping me w/ this.. i was so scared that intense stabbing dry-glue like feeling was going to last for days or weeks as it has in the past w/ sjogrens.. ughh...

thanks again!!! and yes i agree with you -they are for "mild" dry eye the kind that at the end of the day after wearing contact you have to use rewetting drops a little bit..not severe or moderate dry eye for sure..

karensummer you hit the nail on the head when you say
alot of days i feel like ive got 2 or 3 lenses in each eye and can't get them out
That's how I feel most days. I've told my husband numerous times that on a daily basis my eyes feel like they used to when I wore contacts and couldn't wait to take them out because my eyes were so dry and hurting.

            Also,
"mild" dry eye the kind that at the end of the day after wearing contact you have to use rewetting drops a little bit..not severe or moderate dry eye for sure
            So true!

Hi I don't have Sjogrens, but have severe dry eyes, I wear contacts everyday, and tho some days are really bad, no matter what most of the time my eyes feel better with them, then without, I actually got the lenses after having a bandage contact put in. I'm very interested in the comment about the high water content of some lenses and that your eyes soak the moisture up, this may be why I have to put in new lens every week even tho most change them every two week to a month. I wear the Acuview Oasis with hydroclear....sounds like wet ones to me. I will be asking about the total 1 lenses.

I have been researching the water content/benefits to dry eye wearers and finding out the MORE water the lens has the worse it is for dry eye sufferers.

I looked on the boxes of some of the lenses I have tried and here is what I have: Air Optix-24% Acuvue Oasys-38% Acuvue Tru-Eye-48% Bio true-78%

Big difference!! The last lens I tried (Bio true) I could only wear for an hour. I also read the material the lens is made of can make a difference too. I will try to find the article again and pass it on!!

This link has lots of lenses listed including their water content: http://www.aclens.com/lens-materials.asp

Interesting because the lenses I wore for the few years before my eyes got so dry that I had to stop wearing them were: Nelfilcon A (69%) – Focus Dailies -they have a very high water content. Before those I was wearing: Ocufilcon D (55%) – Biomedics 55. (I wore contact lenses for 23 years.) I was prescribed the daily lenses since my eyes produced a lot of protein build-up and my doc at that time said daily disposables would prevent the problems the build-up caused me (irritation, etc.)

The Total 1 lenses apparently are a "gradient silicone hydrogel daily disposable contact lenses featuring an increase from 33% to over 80% water content from core to surface"

                    hey there again!!
Ok went to a corneal specialist who works with my opthamologist (whom i adore but is on a cruise right now). anyway. he and another doc both said it wasnt the contacts! ??? possible it could be solution they are stored in. etc. i could try again at a later date. etc. talked about bandage lens. also said people with dry eye need to use drops every hour while wearing contacts-i didnt do that but am so scared to try ever again-

did you two use drops hourly while having contacts in??? he also mentioned synergeyes which people on here talk about..

then he mentioned ICL-a surgery where they go behind your lens and put a new lens in-people in the military due it if they are too dry for lasik etc and obviously they cannot wear glasses or contats in combat.. anyway insurance doenst cover and supposedly it is used in lots of dry eye people. I would be scared to do that and its like $7000 out of pocket!!!

then i got to thinking if its so safe (like they say lasik is) why dont celebrities (all of them) get it done-lately i see more and more wear glasses-maybe not all the time but like jen aniston, jen garner. jenny mcarthy (prob tolook smarter ) , diane keaton-99% of the time except in some movies-but in most she wears her rimless (love her!) and whoopi goldbert, and lots of men..so my point is why wouldnt they be having this surgery when they have to act and a lot of them have to either wear contacts on screen or nothing and they have plenty of $$$

high water means drier eyes -that is what they say..hmmmm. i also always got a lot of protein buildup when i used to wear the monthly ones in my teens and 20s.. then i went to 2 weeks-they just started the dailies around the time or a little before i got dry and they were very $$$ i recall..

so are yougoing to try contacts again? i am too scared. my eyes are better now.but its not worth going through days of hell!

Yep! I think it is the best way to describe how we feel most of the time or at least part of the time on days.. contact lens wearers do understand dry eye more than people who dont wear contacts and have never had dry eye.. i find that to be true.. so basically am i saying contacts dry everyone's eyes out???hmmm.. sounds like it. huh?? what do u think/ anyone on here??? It is odd how certain docs are for it and the one i went to today is a wonderful kind man and great surgeon but has 2025 vision except needs reading glasses and he even said for awhile he wore one contact so he didnt have to wear reading glasses-i asked him why he stopped and he said because of older age and dry eyes! ??? makes no sense

No, I'm not. When I tried them I did use drops every 2 hours. For me, having to use drops every hour just to be able to wear them successfully for a few hours a day would not be worth it. I'd like to get away from using drops so often - I definitely don't want to have to rely on them more frequently.

so you just wear cute glasses? i think i am going to stick with that--i wear rimless and all types are in style now and i think a lot of people are wearing them too because of hte increase in dry eye=we only have 1 pair of eyeballs! thanks for replying!! I too don't want to have to put in a drop every hour when somedays i have to every 5 minutes cause my eyes are killing me! and when i have days where they feel so good and are overtearing i dont want to have to use drops to wear contacts. i am 39 -i see we are pretty close in age.
