    Saliva

Transplanting a tear duct from the cheek to the eye is an old treatment for dry eye syndrome in dogs. The surgery generally works but there are a few side effects. Mainly, the eye tears a lot when the dog is eating or even anticipating having food. Also the tears contain a lot of solutes that can precipitate causing painful lumps under the eyelid. I imagine the procedure is possible in people.

I think this process helps only when the situation really bad is. New 'tears' wont be like the real tears and they sure have some side effects, but better than being blind.

        I'd try scleral lenses first.

More when I get back from Boston ... this weekend.
