    2nd Pair

I got my second pair of Superfocus glasses a couple of weeks ago. I ordered two pair to have a backup pair, and also to set up one for only close-up work like my model building, which I haven't been able to do conveniently without magnifiers. I also bought 4 extra lens with different add values in the sphere correction. That way I can exchange them if one eye is giving me more problems than the other one, which is frequently the case. Superfocus has a right and left lens, but since I don't have an astigmatism correction anymore, I can use either lens on the left or right side.

I have to say these have worked great for me. I've been able to work longer hours with fewer problems. They haven't solved every problem but they've made a big difference. My progressives were causing me eye strain which was making my dry eye problems worse. Sometimes when I first put on the Superfocus glasses my vision is only so so, but after I wear them awhile, by vision improves. I think the ability to change the focal length gradually relaxes my eye muscles.

    Anyway, they work for me.

      NoSquint

This is an update on my experiences with NoSquint which is a software addon for Firefox that let's me manipulate the size of text on webpages. As the text gets larger it also gets darker.

After a little more than a month using the NoSquint addon it has made a huge difference in my eye strain.

By enlarging the text and having it become darker, it makes it much easier to read webpages as I use the internet. Other programs like Excel and Word allowed me to change font size which helps with them. Windows lets me have some control over the text size in menus and tool bars but if the web page is allowed to control itself, text adjustment is minimal.

With NoSquint I can custom adjust the text on every page. It works great and has made my eye strain and therefore, my dry eye symptoms much less. The combination of the Superfocus glasses and the NoSquint have me working as much or as little as I want rather than having to quit when my eye sight got too blurry.

I wrote about NoSquint in detail in the workplace section of the forum in Another Software Program that Helps

Hope it helps others with problems working with computers and dry eye. It has really helped me. There are a couple of more methods of adjusting screen size mentioned under that post topic.

        Update 3

This is a short update about the three products I'm using to help my dry eye.

No Squint is a program that enlarges text on web pages. With high res monitors, the text is entirely too small. Using the MS 125% plus three text size choice options, not only changes the text but it screws up icons, etc so that's not very effective.

No Squint has worked well. Two frustrating things-- using the global settings is not a very good option because different web pages react differently to No Squint, so global setting often fail. And second, using individual page settings requires each page be sized as they are opened. That takes a bit of getting used to, but it saves my eyes so until I have a better alternative I'll keep on using No Squint.

The F.lux program continues to keep the monitor brightness under control. So no problems there.

The Superfocus glasses work very well, as I've mentioned before. In fact, I'm wearing them right now. Some days my vision is good enough that I can wear my regular progressive lens, but many times I just can't see well enough with them to work on the computer for very long. I've also found that putting on my Superfocus glasses early in the day prevents some of my vision decline later in the day. I have multiple lens with prescription variations in them which allows me to balance the right and left eye independently. That's a big plus. I also have a lens with an astigmatism correction in it. Since the lenses are round, I can switch them between the left and right eye. They are magnetic so it's a 2 second job. With the lens that has the astigmatism correction, I can rotate it which changes the correction somewhat until it's optimal at the time. The odd part is that I can't use the lens with the astigmatism correction for long or my vision declines. When that happens I switch back to the normal lens and things are fine again. Apparently my right eye sometimes changes shape slightly during the day, and that lens helps to change it back to the proper shape. So I'm glad I have the Superfocus glasses. Some people don't like them because they are small diameter round lens. I don't care because they fix my complicated vision problems caused by a mix of dry eye and diabetic issues.

Anyway, that's how things are going. I had progressed to stage 3 dry eye problems and now I'm mostly at a stage 1 or stage 2. I also take Krill oil and flax seed oil everyday. I can't measure the impact of that because any changes from those are gradual and take place over a long time.

The combination of things I do isn't optimal or easy but they've made my visual life a lot better. If I couldn't work on the computer, I would be in trouble.

              Small Relapse

Well, here we are in December and over the last two weeks I've had a small relapse. My dry eye suddenly got worse. My vision is much worse and the dryness is much more evident.

I'm going to the eye doc tomorrow for my regular checkup. I'll see if he notices anything. I don't know if I'm producing fewer tears or the tears are less effective. I didn't change anything in regard to what I was doing. But it could be the weather, the humidity or some other variable that changes this time of year.

My right eye is noticeably worse than my left. It's always been the case that my right eye gave me more problems, but the difference seems bigger this time.

Reading, computer usage and even watching television are all impacted.

If I find out anything of any interesting over the next few weeks. I'll post again. I've been very stable and probably only stage 1 for the last several months. Now I feel like I'm a stage 3 again. Not good!

I'll have to increase the number of things I'm doing to manage it. That means more hours per day using my variable focus glasses, eye drops and heat. Oh, well. Just more unproductive stuff to do.

                Hi jackoloso,

I'm happy to see your posts have been allowed as life can be difficult enough for most of us dealing with DES. I feel that all the information you've shared should be of interest to anyone afflicted with DES who wears eyeglasses. I have a three-diopter difference in the prescription for my eyes, and convergence insufficiency so it was suggested for me to ware contacts instead of eyeglasses --the discrepancy in diopters is more tolerable with contacts-- but because of my DES I can't use contacts so I've been waiting for the Trufocals to become available here in Spain. I knew about them a year ago. Please do let us know about your continued experience with them.

So I contacted "Trufocals". I thought the year I waited gave them enough time to open up a store on this side of the Atlantic but I was wrong.

Here's the reply I got from them:

Superfocus was formally known as Trufocals. It is still owned and operated by the same people, we just changed the name when we started television advertising. Go to www.trufocals.com and see.

Read the "Imprint" regarding the Trufocals transition to Superfocus
I have attached a fax-able order form (with itemized pricing) along with the different options available. Pricing is also available on our website, CLICK HERE, to go to our online frame and lens gallery.

                    Superfocus in Europe

                    Ariel,

I have no idea if Superfocus glasses are sold in Europe. If you contact customer service by email or call them, I would assume they can ship the glasses anywhere in the world, but I'm not sure.

Mine work very well. I wear them mostly for working on the computer and sometimes at night when I watch television. I have a variety of lens with different corrections in them so I can interchange the lenses to match my current eye conditions.

I'm also have a new pair of progressives made that are half a diopter higher than my normal glasses. That way I can switch to them when my eyes get tired.
