Hats and Computer Vision Syndome
Yours sounds like a non-typical case. I use a very low background light when I work at my computer and I still have computer vision syndrome.
I know that bright light, especially outdoors, bothers me, so avoid that. I have arranged my office so there is no bright natural light or overhead lights, especially fluorescents, and that helps me a bit, but that doesn't solve many problems. I still get blurry vision, dry eye and eye strain. The only thing that has helped is specialized prescription computer glasses.
I've posted in the workplace section a link to an article on computer vision syndrome.
I wish my computer vision syndrome could be fixed by simply adjusting the light. I would wear three hats if I had to. You're lucky you found something simple that works.
