  • I finally got relief

I have been struggling with my dry eyes since the end of June 2011 with 0 Schirmer scores in both eyes. While that might not seem long, it is more than long enough for me. I have seen some of the top doctors throughout the United States and have tried almost every treatment option available to include scleral lenses at Boston Foundation for Sight (BFS). In the fall of 2011 they attempted to fit me with lenses but I could only wear them for around one hour before they became painful and had to be taken out. They eventually diagnosed me with corneal neuralgia, which now I realize was not my problem. (The scrambler they used as BFS did not work for me.) After taking the lenses out, my eyes “rebounded” significantly with even more pain and redness. I left there dejected and hopeless. I continued researching and found post about a Dr. G. Upon further research I found Dr. Greg Gemoules and his practice just outside of Dallas, TX. After numerous email exchanges with Dr. G, I travelled from New York City to Dallas in hopes he could help. There I was introduced to his patented fitting technique using a combination of several technologies. This was not something anyone else had done up to that point. He carefully scanned and mapped my eyes to provide a known starting point instead of just using stock lenses (premade starting lense). The lenses he created were much more custom and a closer fit than anything created prior to that point. Each time he crafted new lenses he used his technology to check the fit instead of just relying on visual inspection like other doctors. The lenses provided relief for 5 to 7 hours for me, which is huge improvement over previous attempts. I only used artificial tears twice during that time and didn’t have to wear goggles. After removal of the lenses I experienced a lot less rebounding than prior attempts at BFS with my pain level returning to the same point as prior to insertion and not the excessive amount I experienced at BFS. Additionally, in prior lenses at BFS I had issues with my eyelids moving over the lens and causing pain. I did not have that problem with Dr. G’s lenses. Dr. G IS NOT A DRY EYE SPECIALIST!!!! Work with your dry eye doctor and if you feel scleral lenses would be a helpful part of your treatment protocol, then Dr. G is definitely the person to go to. He took great care of me with lots of one-on-one attention. He showed a level of compassion that I had not experienced prior to that point. He even went so far as to research other medical conditions I have to see if they were causing additional issues with my eyes. He is a problem solver and is continually working to improve his process. I highly recommend him and will continue my treatment relationship with him.

            Tanner, this sounds so interesting.
What type of dry eye do you have? And what is the type of lense?
Who is dr G? Have you also seen dr L in New York? i am thinking of going there.

I have 0 schirmer, mild mgd, and pretty much no staining. The lenses from Dr. G are scleral but are not simetrical and follow the shape of the eye well. If you put the bfs lens and the Dr. G lens next to each other I could tell the difference because the bfs lens is more perfect looking but didn't fit my eye as well. I think this is why I still had pain. There is no trial lens with Dr. G. He takes measurements with his technology then orders a lens to be made for your eye. He is in Texas. He has a patent on his work. The man is really smart.

He does a lot of work with people who's vision is distorted from lasik as well.

              I have not had lasik.
