  • Tacrolimus finally helped me

    Hello everyone.

Let me just start by thanking this incredible community, for it has certaintly helped my mental state very, very much. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all, and I hope you do not give up and that you find what works for you. You desever so much and I bet life WILL get better.

My dry eye journey started at a young age, my earliest doctor apointment for red eyes that I can recall was at 14 years old (i'm 24 now). I did'nt really take it seriously and did'nt do any treatment. For years I'd use those cheap instant effect Naphazoline hydrochloride drops that are really damaging to the eye from time to time, as my redness would come and go.

Last year however it was quite bad and constant, so I went to the doctor again, and that (deep breath not to curse her name) wonderful person did a wonderful sales pitch for the light pulse treatment, which I fell for and spent a LOT of money on. Needless to say it was worthless and didn't do anything. After acting shocked by it, she recommended me another guy, and he prescribed me Tacrolimus (eye drops, 0.03%). I live in Belo Horizonte, a medium sized city in Brazil, here they dont keep it on stock since it has a 3 month shelf life so they have to do a new batch when you order. As I waited, I read about it here and got mixed feelings, except for that one girl that claimed to go into remission thanks to it, and did give me some hope.

Some people here were arguing about cancer as a side effect, I asked 3 different doctors and they all said its not a thing

I was warned by my doctor that it can give a burning sensation when you apply it, so since I was already really scared and fearing my eyes were too sensitive and only applied it in one eye, hahaha. After the burning subsided a few minutes later i did the other. I kid you not, only two or three days later, my eyes (almost) completely cleared up. I was prescribed 1 drop every 12 hours for 3 months and oh boy, you can't imagine how happy I was. The redness that was crippling my self esteem and my will to go out and do things was all but gone! Granted, every few days it would be a bit more prevalent, but nothing major.

After the three months I got it again without going back to the doctor, and it kept working, after six months I went to a different doctor, she told me I could order another one (so three more months of using it) but recommended me going to an allergist, which tested me and apparently I have some allergy to dust and polen and prescribed me a bunch of stuff which I was going to start this week, now that my last tacro ran out.

This last three months however, the effectiveness wore down a bit, but to be fair, I started getting lazy and only applying it once per day as opposed to the prescribed twice per day, and missing some days too. I cant remember exactly when it started being less effective and when I started being lazy, so i'm not so sure that my lazyness is the culprit (or the sole culprit) or i'm just becoming resistant to it.

    - My dry eye symptoms are mainly red eyes and sometimes the sensation that there is something in my eyes (however, I have pretty big eyelashes and they often DO get in my eye)
    - The doctors always ask if I rub my eyes but I never do. They also tell me I have no (i forgot the disease name for when you rub too much)
    - The light pulse doctor did that TBT, Melbomiam glands and other stuff test and they werent good, but not terrible either
