  • "90% improved"

So sayeth my eye doctor. I'm thrilled!

He says the improvement "is remarkable," and that he rarely sees it in Sjogren's patients. So I'm celebrating!

I saw him 3 months ago, and I can't say that my eyes actually feel much different than they did then, but apparently the dry spots and "scatches" (his term) are almost all healed. I have known now for quite a few months that I'm more stable, with fewer flareups.

He was particularly interested in hearing more about FreshKote. I had gotten the Rx from my previous doctor and was asking for a refill. He had heard of it, he said, but didn't think it was any different than other OTC drops, and didn't know that it was prescription only. He took notes about what my "eye routine" is, what drops I use and when---seemed quite interested. I mentioned Dry Eye Zone (of course) as my source of product information.

I think much of the credit goes to FreshKote (been using that for 6 months), but other factors contribute, too. I've been doing the Q-tip Latkany eye massage/cleaning every day, the Rice Baggy, GentealGel, and TranquilEyes at night.

    One more thing:
My doctor said that recent research shows that plugs aren't a good solution for people with Sjogren's, since they cause more inflammation. He said he has been removing quite a few plugs for his patients. He removed my only remaining plug today---we'll see what happens. I had told him that eye was generally more irritated than the other. He said the plug has raised a bit and was scratching my eye. That was my observation too---that my eye was in a chronic state of trying to expel the plug.

    Thanks for reading, everybody!

          Thanks for the post.

Would you keep us up to date and let us know how you get on with the plug removed. I have MGD and plugs and don't seem to be able to move forward in my recovery. I am thinking of discussing removing at least one of the plugs, but am a little afraid at the same time.

              Bermee,

I seem to be doing fine without the plug, but it's only been 2 days.

I don't know if plug removal would be recommended for MGD. My doctor mentioned that now he only uses plugs if a patient is also using a steroid drop like FML or Restasis. In my case it made sense to remove it, because I don't use a steroid drop. So I only have my own tear balancing mechanisms to damp down the inflammation caused (presumably) by inflammatory byproducts building up in my tears and not draining out the punta.

And I have also observed a very clear connection during the past year, between plugs and increased inflammation. For me, the inflammation symptoms are scratchy, itchy eyes, more irritation, redness, more of a dry feeling. Then I started to notice that the area around the plug would be chronically red and swollen. With one plug (that was too large---put in by my other doctor) the relief without the plug was instant and permanent.

The one I just got removed---it was a small plug and had been there since April--the negative effect was much more subtle. That's why I was hesitant to have it removed because I assumed it must be doing some good. I just noticed that compared to my other, plug-free eye, this eye was always more irritated---always begging for attention. The doctor suggested removing it, but said he'd put another in if it didn't work out. That flexibility on his part helped me with the decision to remove it.

                Thanks for your reply.

i have a load of inflammation going on in there along with the MGD. My lasik Dr. put in my plugs and my new trustworthy cornea specialist is very much on the fence regarding the use of plugs for MGD and he says there is alot of controversy about this issue, however when I say him I was having a really good three weeks so he said leave well enough alone, but that turned out just to be a teaser.

i am on all the regular stuff, Doxy, Azacite etc but just don't seem to be improving. I need to have a "next step" in my treatment, just to feel there is something still out there. I think I will discuss this with him, after all I can always get them put back in.

I am glad to hear you are doing well, I hope to be posting the same myself fairly soon,
