  • IPL In NorCal Bay Area

    Hi All,

I just learned that Dr Neil Friedman in Palo Alto, CA is doing IPL for DES/MGD. He was trained by Dr Toyos and has just obtained the machine. I have never been to him and cannot speak to anything more than that he is doing the Toyos procedure. The assistant I spoke to said something about a study and I believe that he may be associated with Stanford. I am going to him to be treated at the end of this month and will post anything new that I find. He is charging $500 a treatment - less than the $750 that Assil charges but more than the $375 that Dr Toyos charges.

    Hope everyone is well.

THANK YOU!!! Seriously, thank you so much for posting this information!!

I have been wanting to get IPL ever since I learned about it here, but cannot afford to travel to LA for it -- especially not once Dr. Assil raised his rate so much. I had contacted Dr. Toyos' office to ask if he had trained anyone in the Bay Area but never received a response.

This is fantastic news! Please do post back after you see him. I will call this week to request an appointment.

      Gretchen,

Thank you for letting us know of another doctor performing IPL! He certainly has an impressive track record:http://www.mpomg.com/index.cfm/doctors/neiljfriedman

So far the doctors I know of who are performing IPL are:

      Dr. Rolando Toyos (Memphis, TN)
Dr. Kerry Assil (Los Angeles, CA)
Dr. Christopher Coad (New York, NY)
      Dr. Richard Yee (Houston, TX)
Dr. Neil Friedman (Palo Alto, CA)

(Thank you, Gretchen, for providing half of this list!)

If anyone hears of any more, please let us know. It's so unfortunate that the treatment is so expensive though, and that so many treatments are needed to achieve initial results, not to mention follow-up treatments.

Depending on your condition, IPL requires frequent re-treatments. The frequency will vary for each person.

Also as a correction, Dr Craig Fowler is not doing this procedure, he just was at a training session that I attended.

          Thanks,
          Gretchen

              Went to Dr Friedman

              Hi All,

I had my IPL treatment with Dr Friedman on Friday. I am happy to report that he was very thorough and did the procedure just like Dr Toyos. He is formerly of the Cleveland Clinic as a corneal specialist and treats many dry eye patients (hence why he invested in the machine). He seemed to be a very dry eye literate doctor, admitting that he has many dry eye patients on referral because the vast amount of optho's do not want to treat dry eye because outcomes are often poor and the arsenal scant. He also said that the vast number of "dry eye" patients are actually blepharo-conjunctivitis which is also a view supported by most dry eye docs that know what they are talking about (Latkany). In short, he was good and I highly recommend him.

And my eyes are doing great. He said that he knows more and more lid specialists that are becoming interested in the procedure and he personally with just a handful of folks have seen a lot of positive results.

              Regards,
              Gretchen
