  • Prescribed Doxycycline today...anybody benefit from this?

100 mgs twice a day is the gig. It is the last option short of a special contact lens. Has anyone had success with this? Restasis, plethora of drops, fish oil, heat, humidifier, etc etc have all failed.

If it was effective I assume I would have heard about it by now.

Mike, I have heard of it, I have taken a course of it, with the possible stated purpose of more tear production. I noticed no difference at all. I tried all the other stuff you have done. Except I have to tape my eyes shut at night.

I am currently taking doxy and I do find that if your eyes are irritated and they sting or burn, then it may help with that as I am currently noticing. Although I doubt it will do much for the eyes physical appearence, esp if its red or has visible veins, therefore drops would also be needed.

I've tried this too- it's one of the usual things that's prescribed if you're not getting anywhere with Restasis, fish oil , compresses etc. It didn't work for me, but I do know others who say that in combination with the restasis, warm compresses, it can be helpful. I hope you are able to get some positive results.

          Hi Mike,

Doxy is a recognized treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction. It has some anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial to you, and can help liquify the meibomian gland secretions. It's a suggested treatment option in the major treatment guidelines, including the mother of them all, the DEWS report: http://www.tearfilm.org/dewsreport/p...DEWS-noAds.pdf

The downside is low, and there is definitely a potential upside, so it's worth a try.

For me, it definitely helped my glands not only look better, but my burning, redness and stinging symptoms improved also. I did a trial off doxy, and everything flared up badly again... went back on it, and it got better.

I'm now off doxy, my eyes have improved enough that my glands no longer get all crazy flared up without it... but when I WAS on it, it did a decent job for me.

@ SAAG, how long were you on doxy for before being able to come off it without irritation and do you also have a good tear quality or not along with the MGD?

              doxy

              Hi Mike,

How long have you had this eye problem? I used doxy 50mg a day when I had my first outbreak of occular rosacea which was 20 years ago. I'm sure that it got rid of of the acute phase. At that time I was only doing warm water soaks. I was on it for about 4 or 5 months and my eyes felt great, almost normal. I stopped it and I was still ok. I haven't had such bad problems till recently. My eyes are out of control. Yes I prob should go back on the doxy. If everthing else doesn't work I will. This outbreak(that's what I'm calling this)started this past nov. But it would settle down a little. It just started getting really bad in jan. That is when I started seeing an opthamologist. She actually put me on 20mg a day. I really don't think that is enough for a result. I was on it for 6 wks. It was killing my stomach this time and I was getting very jittery from it. Which was odd bc I don't remember that happening to me 20 years ago, so I stopped taking it. I am seeing an accupuncturist MD right now. He doesn't want me on meds. But if nothing else works in another month I'm going back on the doxy but at least 50mg a day. I think you should try it but it can take a few months to start working

                Mike,

Yes doxy works for me. I need to stay at 100 mgs twice a day or the symptoms (burning, stinging, etc.) come back.

Give it over a month before you give up, as I didn't notice relief until about day 30 or so.
