  • Wild swings...the most frustrating part

Saturday was a bad day of dry eye vision, Sunday was worse, so bad I thought I might have some corneal abrasion in my left eye. Really aweful and toughest outbreak in weeks.

Today (Mon) despite having a healthy dose of LacriLube in each eye, I awoke with eye pain at 4AM and splashed in Systane. I went back to sleep and started my day at 6:30. By 8AM I was seeing incredible, eagle vision, all day. I swear I could see a a fly on a deer's back at 100 yards. My eyeglass prescription was like Saran Wrap, not needed at all, I left my glasses in the car all day. Absolutely incredible vision but was experiencing unusual discomfort (pain) most of the day. Humidity where I live was 19% today.

The wild swings are the toughest, no changes in my routine, well hydrated, ointment at night, Restasis, usual drops, humidifier at night. Wild swings from one day to the next, total mystery.

Why does it go from near inabiity to function one day to pristine the next? I guarantee tommorrow will be bad, I never have 2 good days in a row.

I'm going to toss out a theory - I am probably totally barking up the wrong tree so don't take me too seriously. But when someone describes vision that clear, my first thought tends to be wow they sound overcorrected I wonder why? (BTW are you far or nearsighted? Assuming near...) If I have a bad episode early in the morning and there's the remnants of say a mini erosion, I will have a lot more reflex tearing going on in response to the surface irritation from the damaged surface. That extra tearing is providing extra refraction. In my case (and I'm talking about without my sclerals in case anyone who knows I wear them is wondering) that's actually kind of a good thing visually because the extra tears both help smooth out irregularity and they increase refraction so I see better.

Welcome to the world of dry eye... irregularity in the epithelium and/or tear film can put our vision all over the place. Like Lucy says (Lucy, are you out there? ) it's all about the color of your socks that day.

Having said all that, I agree with Joseph. Enjoy the good ones, and know that the bad ones too shall pass.
