MGD: why is it chronic?

Everywhere I read about MGD I see it described as a chronic condition.

However, I haven't come across any information that actually explains why it is chronic. I was hoping somebody on the forum might be able to provide a little insight about this.

Also, in medicine, does chronic always specifically mean 'for life' or can it also be used to describe something 'long-lasting,' but not necessarily permanent?
