  • UK NHS optometrist clinics in universities

I wonder if there are public access eye clinics in training centres around the world.

Anglia Ruskin University is one of the few Universities in the UK to have established its own Eye Clinic. Our primary aim is to enable undergraduates on our Optometry and Ophthalmic Dispensing courses to gain essential clinical experience, along with providing a high level of optical care to the local community. Our Clinic boasts 16 fully equipped optometric consulting rooms including specialist facilities in Contact Lenses, Low Vision and Visual Stress. The clinic was founded in 1998 and has helped over 380 Optometry students graduate, we work together with local schools and societies to help promote good ocular health in our community. Our students are fully supervised by qualified Optometrists who are a mixture of full time lecturers and external visiting clinicians from local practices. Our Clinic is based on our Cambridge campus and is open to the general public throughout the year.

Cardiff University School of Optometry & Vision Sciences: 'In research, the School has an international reputation as a world-class School. This is built on the research expertise of our academic staff and the quality of the research facilities available in the School. The primary objective of the School is to achieve the highest quality vision research in order to facilitate the early detection and diagnosis of eye diseases and their successful treatment. Research is co-ordinated through four research groups, which provides a breadth of research, which enables a truly multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach to our investigations of vision and visual pathologies.' 'To uphold the highest standards of clinical excellence and provide access to care for all users regardless of circumstances or means.'

Open access eye clinics at universities and training centres. There are more to find, check the universities near you with ophthalmology and optometry centres. Increase the chance of diagnosis and good referral. Please feedback if this works for you.

I have been to the Cardiff School of Optometry for an eye test. My experience was that the optometrist was probably better informed than most high street optometrists, but not heavily into research, a jobbing optometrist. The guys into the dry eye research appear on the web to be mainly academics, but I must admit at the time of booking my appointment I did not enquire specifically about seeing a dry eye expert, maybe they do see clinic patients and would ask before booking next time.
