  • Searching for a doc in Europe

    Hello.

Please suggest the best dry eye specialist or clinic in Europe. I am prepared to travel to any point in Europe so the field is wide.
Problems probably include both meibomian gland dysfunction and insufficient tear production in otherwise healthy woman.

    Thank you!

    Hi,

    Where are you located?
I know an optometrist specialized in dry eye in the netherlands.

      I am from Estonia.

I am a bit confused regarding to who should I visit, optometrist or opthalmologist. I am leaning a bit towards opthalmologist because they have more extensive medical training, thus they recognise more different general health issues, that may be related to dry eye.
Regardless of this post, could you still PM contacts (or post in the thread, does not matter to me) , so I can google the optometrist.

      Thank you!

I highly recommend the Dry eye clinic in Oslo. Dr Sten Reader at Torreoyne klinikken. There are quite a few people from tvis forum who has been there. They are dedicated to dry eye syndrom.

I would also recommend them, they have really cutting-edge diagnostic devices like Keratograph 5m for meibography or confocal microscopy, so should be able to give you good diagnosis.
Or dry eye ambulance in Graz, Austria is also really good, maybe even better, they perform e.g. tests for demodex, allergy tests from eyes directly, impression cytology probably on each pacient. Moreover have devices like TearLab osmolarity test, Keratograph 5m, RPS Inflammadry, etc.

This is getting quite interesting. Is Here someone who has been to both of these places (Oslo and Graz)? maybe you could comment? I wonder If I should ask from the mentioned clinics directly which is better/more advanced?

I was at both, in Oslo it's private, so they were really patient to answer my questions, but they said I had no MGD, which was obviously not correct. But it's possible that at that time my meibom. glands were more or less ok, taht my problem was more like aqueous def. At that time they weren't performing meibography, just expressing glands. I was at Graz a year after visiting Oslo. It's normal hospital ambulance. But there were 3 doctors, the head is Jutta Horwath-Winter. She is a real expert, attending important conferences, being aware of new trends & information etc. and know what she should look at. In fact all of them. I just wrote them that I would like to see my meib. glands via meibography and was actually examined very thoroughly. I didn't expect they would do automatically demodex checking, allergy testing (they take some scrubes from your eyes) or impression cytology (for this I don't know the result, will receive at the next appointment). Moreover they check in eyes a lot of things, like Marx's line, revert eyelids, they have some equipment for checking lipid layer etc. Everything done automatically, but it takes some time. I was there for more than 3 hours, of course some time waiting, like waiting for demodex & allergy results, etc. It was better, but for Oslo appointment I was waiting 1 month, for Graz more than 4 months.
