  • Dry Eye Doctor in Boston?

    Hi,
i'm currently moving to Boston from Italy...I've been already to Dr. Latkany and I surely will go back to him once in the US. I also think that having a good doctor in Boston would be great since if I have any problem with plugs ecc i onestly don't want to rush to NY (not to mention how much it would cost everytime).
Should I go to the Boston Foundation for Sight?
Anyone heard of Dr. Foster from MERSI?

    Thanks

    Dry Eye Doc Boston

I have seen many of the doctors in the area and the best one to date after over 45 years of seeing many many doctors my first choice would be Dr. Helen Wu at New England Medical. My 2nd choice would be Dr. Soukasian at Lahey. Many of the ones I have seen just go through the motions. I was reccomended to her from a specialist who said I was too complicated for him. If there is a better one in the Boston area I have not found him or her yet. These are the only 2 I have found that really get into helping with dry eye compared to the rest so far and have knowledge of it..

        Mass Eye and Ear

I had a bad, bordering on traumatic experience at Mass Eye and Ear with a highly regarded doctor. It was a long time ago, I have since received good treatment, but I am still angry at how I was treated. Just a word of warning.

          Dr. Foster @ MERSI

Dr. C. Stephen Foster at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute (MERSI) is an excellent corneal specialist with 30 years + experience. He taught two of my current Ophthalmologists at Harvard. I personally had a good experience with him, and plan to go up to Boston to see him again.

I would be curious to know which doctor at Mass Eye and Ear you are referring to and why the experience was traumatic. I live in Boston and may well use ME&E in the near future. Don't be shy!

This is a really good example of something to use private messaging for.

                Yes, that's probably true.
Of course, we could always start a new forum called "Knock-a-Doc!"

Boston has many researchers who practice

There are indeed some luminaries, in Boston, in the field of dry eye research. . .I would suggest, though, to anyone being treated by an individual actively involved in research towards development of commercial products, that it is important to know ahead of time which product a practitioner has developed, so that if the recommendation ends up being limited to that product, the patient can at least consider getting additional opinions and approaches. Doctors in the Boston area have invented TheraTears and Soothe, for example, and the doctors in question still maintain their practices. . .Just keep eyes open to be sure that you are rounding out information you receive from an inventor/researcher with information you receive from other sources. . .

I have been to 10 or so eye docs over the past six years. I fly to Dr. Latkany every month or so for checkups.

I was in the Boston area and saw Stephen Foster because he is one of the most highly regarded eye docs in the field (specifically ocular surface issues). He is fairly reserved, but absolutely knows what he is talking about and is on the cutting edge of research in the field (androgen therapy, etc).

He diagnosed me with SLK in both eyes, as a co-contributor to my ongoing dry eye (schirmers 0-2, TBUT <5 sec, atrophied meibomian glands). Every other doctor has missed this, and he said it is most likely a reason I have been unresponsive to every treatment thus far bc it creates persistent inflammation on the ocular surface.

I am only 28 and a male with no significant medical issues in past....So I would go see him.

                              Dryasadesert,

What treatment has been prescribed for your SLK? My doctor mentioned that I may have it and I started on acetyl cysteine eye drops for it. Don't know if they are helping yet (Only 2 weeks into tx) but they aren't hurting which is a plus.
