Hi! Just wanted to say I am so glad I found this forum. I have had dry eyes for about 7 years, since I turned 40, and have punctal plugs( Smartplugs) for about 5 years. Improving my diet ( adding Omega 3's) has helped me quite a bit, but still my left tear duct has been inflamed on and off for about 6 months now. It got so bad last month that I was referred to an opthamologic surgeon to possibly remove the plug. The day before my appt, to my horror, something erupted out of the tear duct. That is when I searched online and found this forum--and learned that at least one of the posters had a similar experience and said it actually was the punctal plug coming out on its own. I was able to describe this to the Dr and she confirmed that probably was what happened. She prescribed antibiotics drops to calm the inflammation and now my eye is greatly improved.
